The World Series is about to start, so I thought I'd post a completely non-DVD poll.

They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care,
They pursued it with forks and hope.
They threatened it's life with a railway share,
They charmed it with smiles and soap

They were unlucky not to get through.  This time last week, I would have put money on them making it.

One of the assistant coach's on the Colorado Rockies farm club got hit with a baseball this year and died. The players, who decide on how the playoff monies is divided, are donating a full share of the winnings to his pregnant widow and their two children. Go Rockies!

They were doing so well too. Nature even wanted them to go with helping them beat the Yanks with the swarm of bugs at Jacob's Field, but as the Cubs say, "There is always next year." Whats interesting is that I bought a World Series '07 "It's Tribe Time" t-shirt at my local Macy's last Saturday. I thought it first it had the ALCS '07 logo, but its the World Series logo. I'm definately gonna save it.

I had heard that.  Sad news indeed.  I say go Rockies also, but not for that reason.  I'd love them to win their first ever World Series.  I'm not a Rockies fan, but it would still be nice for them to win it.  (My Cards well and truly said goodbye to their chances a while back)

Sounds like you picked up a gem, although I reckon next year's winners will be my team, the Cardinals.  Looking back through WS history, they win a WS and then all but one time they've won another WS within 2 or 3 years (normally 2).

Why are the US baseball champions called the World Champions when they've never played a team from another country?

Same for the NFL.

However, in Ice Hockey the champions aren't given the crown of World Champions. Which seems rather odd, because at least Canadian teams complete in that. But then again, the Canadians frequently win and you can have a non US World Champion

Surely the nearest to a baseball world champion would be the team that won at the last Olympics. Which currently is Cuba

I heard somewhere recently that this is called the "World" series because the original sponsors were the "World" newspaper company. I had always wondered how the US (and Canada) can be considered the world but it is not a global competition like say the "World Cup' of rugby or cricket.

They've been called the World Series for a very long time.  And, unless I'm totally out in left field (pun intended) at the time the series was named, few (if any) people in other countries had heard of, much less played, baseball.

I could be wrong about this, and I'll glady stand corrected if I am.

Here is where the name "World Series" came from according to WikiPedia:

The title of this championship may be confusing to some readers from countries where baseball is not a major sport (or even where it is), because the "World" Series is confined to the champions of two baseball leagues that currently operate only in the United States and Canada.

The explanation is that when the term "World's Championship Series" was first used in the 1880s, baseball at a highly-skilled level was almost exclusively confined to North America, especially the United States. Thus it was understood that the winner of the major league championship was the best baseball team in the world. The title of this event was soon shortened to "World's Series" and later to "World Series".

The United States continued to be the only professional baseball country until some decades into the 20th Century. The first Japanese professional baseball efforts began in 1920. The current Japanese leagues date from the late 1940s. Various Latin American leagues also formed around that time.
