I have a 37" Westinghouse LCD HD-TV. Recently I've noticed what appear to be dark smudges on a portion of the screen. They're only visible at various times - usually when there's a light coloring on the screen. What could be causing these/how can I fix it? It's beginning to become distracting.

Couple of low-quality pictures taken from my cell phone...the first one is on an all-white background, and the second one is on the same background, but with a dimmer screen (screensaver):

"I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?

No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose…
Rapture."

You just had to do it, right? Nobody named you, nobody did anything to you in this thread, yet you had to jump in and be nasty. And then you wonder why you get in trouble so much. Unbelievable. You just missed a golden opportunity to keep your mouth shut Skip.

As for your problem, Chibul, sorry, can't help you with it. Never seen that myself.

Wow. You're a prick.

Talk about instigating. I didn't ask the almighty Skip for his help. I'm sure there are others here who are *gasp* as knowledgeable as you.

Chibul,

Have you tried cleaning the screen? Check the documentation to see if they have any recomendations as to what should be used. Also check and see if the TV has a degaussing feature. Also check for any magnets, as in speakers, or electric motors near the areas the smudges show up. What's behind the wall the TV is on? Possibly a refridgerator or other appliance that could be interfering with the screen? Can you move the TV several feet away from the wall or to another wall to see if it is interference?

You can also try calling Westinghouse, I'm sure they have an 800 help line. Maybe one of their techs can help.

Those are all the suggestions I have, hope one of them help. Let us know, never know, maybe someone else has the same problem and your solution will help them.

No. I'll try it, but it doesn't really look like it's an external smudge, if that makes sense.

Forgive me for ignorance, but what is deguassing?

There is a center speaker directly below the TV. Nothing at all on the wall behind it...nothing else even near it.

Tried cleaning...no dice.

On the same shelf that the TV sits on, there's a center speaker (has always been there since I've had the TV, so for about 14 months), an XBox 360 (just moved it there last week) and a PS3 (moved there yesterday). Other than the speaker, up until those new changes, nothing else has ever been near it - there is a tall floor lamp about two feet away.

Do you think it's burn-in?  I hear keeping a bright-white screen on for 12-24 hours can fix that.

That's what I'm doing right now, using the white screen. We'll give it a shot...it'd be a strange burn-in, though. No idea what it could be from.

He didn't ask YOU to help him so why did you respond?  If you weren't going to help him, there was absolutely no need for you to respond in any way, shape or form...unless you were trying to cause trouble.  Please, tell me again how you simply respond and don't instigate.

As to the OP, I don't own and LCD so can't help you there...wish I could.

Would you really want the moron's help anyway?

Sony TV's had a similiar problem with clouding. Seems you are having the opposite effect though. It was supposed to be fixed with a patch. So it might be a warranty issue.

BTW, deguassing, if I remember correctly was what you could do to old CRT monitors, could be wrong though.

To degauss is to remove built up magnetic charge. You will see it in old CRT TVs and monitors. I'm not an engineer, so not sure if an LCD suffers from the problem.

As an experiment, try moving the Xbox 360 and PS3 further away to see if the smudges go away or change.

Will do. One thing to note, though - the smudges were there before I put those two systems near the TV.

I'm not 100% certain but I am pretty sure that LCD and Plasma aren't affected by magnetic build-up.  I've never seen a LCD monitor come with a degauss option either.

QUICK!  Somebody hold up a magnet to their LCD screen!
