I was playing around with the Simple Statistics plugin and the built in charts and reports and figured a forum survey about the various collections of the membership could be fun.

So, a few questions:

1. What's your oldest movie and which year was it produced?
2. What are your three most common production years?
3. How many different countries of origin do you have?
4. What are your top three genres?
5. What are your top three studios?
6. What are your most common ratings?
7. Who are your top three actors?
8. Who are your top three directors?
9. Who are your top three screenwriters?
10. Who are your top three producers?
11. Who are your top three composers?

And for number 12, a more subjective question:

12. What is, in your estimation, your most obscure movie?

1. "Laurel and Hardy Shorts" from 1922
2. 2001 (33), 2002 (29), 2004 (26).
3. 11
4. Comedy (254), Action (99), Drama (88)
5. Paramount Pictures (30), Nordisk Film (27), Universal Pictures (18)
6. 15 år (187), 11 år (97) A (96) (which in Denmark means that you're not allowed to see it if you are younger than 15/11 years. "A" means allowed for all).
7. Michael Dorn, Frank Welker, Buster Larsen. If I weed out the series where actors are credited more than once, it becomes Bruce Willis, Rowan Atkinson, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
8. Erik Balling (a Dane), Steven Spielberg, Carlos Baeza.  Again, weeding out the series, it is Steven Spielberg, Carlos Baeza, Mark Kirkland.
9. Lise Nørgaard. Richard Curtis, George Meyer.
10. Bo Christensen, Bob Weinstein, Harvey Weinstein (4th is Steven Spielberg).
11. Bent Fabricius-Bjerre (15), Danny Elfman (12), Alan Silvestri (9).
12. I guess that would have to be "A.I." - just hate the ending...

1. What's your oldest movie and which year was it produced?
That would be "Nosferatu" from 1922. Followed by "Murder" from 1931 and "The Man Who Knew Too Much" from 1934.

2. What are your three most common production years?
2001, 1999, 2000 <-- This probably has more to do with when I was the most addicted to buying DVDs (a huge chunk from those years were blind buys) than to do with what production years are my favourite. Although 1999 was one hell of a year.

3. How many different countries of origin do you have?
18

4. What are your top three genres?
Drama wins by a hair, followed by Action and then Comedy.

5. What are your top three studios?
Warner Bros., followed closely by Universal and then Paramount.

6. What are your most common ratings?
R, which accounts for about 50% of my collection. Followed by PG-13 and NR.

7. Who are your top three actors?
Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Gene Hackman

8. Who are your top three directors?
I've got a three-way tie for the top: Joel Schumacher, Kjell Sundvall and Steven Spielberg

9. Who are your top three screenwriters?
I've got Ian Fleming in the top, but only because he gets an "Original Material By" credit for all the Bond movies. Not counting Fleming, my top three are: Richard Maibaum, Sylvester Stallone and William Goldman. Maibaum is also connected with the Bond series of movies, as the most prolific screenwriter of that franchise.

10. Who are your top three producers?
Bob and Harvey Weinstein are tied for the top. Followed by Arnon Milchan and then Steven Spielberg.

11. Who are your top three composers?
Jerry Goldsmith, James Newton Howard, John

12. What is, in your estimation, your most obscure movie?
This is a tricky question as it depends a lot on whose point of view you're considering. I've got some European movies which are very well-known in their native countries, but which very few North Americans would've ever heard of. Are these obscure? I don't think I'll count them as such. In which case I think it's a toss up between Kardia or
Seksmisja.

Ah. I didn't mean "obscure" as in "strange" but rather as in "rare, unheard of." But your answer is fine too.

Okaaaay... Then I think it is "My Cousin Vinny" - took me almost 2½ years to track that down on R2 with danish subs - but I got it two days ago (after having it on order from my local DVD-pusher for nearly 18 months)!

1. What's your oldest movie and which year was it produced?
An 1889 Edison short... there is a "movie" where animated renderings of Eadweard Muybridge's 1877-'85 primitive motion studies are done, but the first films are from '89.

2. What are your three most common production years?
Because I've stopped going to the movie theater, they are the most recent ones (2004, '05, '06). Going back to the time when I went to the movies, instead of saving money by buying them on DVD, 1958, 1957, 1955.

3. How many different countries of origin do you have?
14

4. What are your top three genres?
Television, Comedy, Drama

5. What are your top three studios?
Warner Home Video, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Paramount Home Entertainment

6. What are your most common ratings?
Not Rated, None, R

7. Who are your top three actors?
Three from "The Simpsons": Harry Shearer, Russi Taylor, Tess MacNeille. Eliminating TV actors (considering the many discs of complete seasons of TV shows where actors are on each disc many times), Buster Keaton, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire.

8. Who are your top three directors?
TV rules again: Jon Cassar, Alfred Hitchcock, Greg Beeman... for movies only, Robert Altman, Buster Keaton, then Hitchcock and Hamilton Luske are tied.

9. Who are your top three screenwriters?
Again, TV dominates the plug-in. (How do I eliminate TV shows from the plugin?)

10. Who are your top three producers?
Again, TV dominates the plug-in. (How do I eliminate TV shows from the plugin?)

11. Who are your top three composers?
Again, TV dominates the plug-in. (How do I eliminate TV shows from the plugin?)

12. What is, in your estimation, your most obscure movie?
Obscure how? Fewest people own the DVD? Fewest people have heard of the movie/show? Most difficult to understand?
How about the movie made from the "Captain Video" TV series?
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

I don't put TV shows in my db, but since there's a Television genre specified I imagine most TV show DVDs have that set as one of their genres?

If that is the case, you can filter your selection to not include that genre and then run the plugin.

Quoting VibroCount:

Obscure how?
As both yourself and Rander has made me realize, this is a good question. When I wrote it I was thinking "fewest people have heard of the movie"... but I guess there's no harm in leaving it open to interpretation. It is a very subjective question already, might as well let it be as subjective as possible.

2. What are your three most common production years?
N/A
3. How many different countries of origin do you have?
Between 1 and 2 dozen
4. What are your top three genres?
Horror, comedy, porn
5. What are your top three studios?
Anchor Bay, Dimension, Universal
6. What are your most common ratings?
R or NR
7. Who are your top three actors?

9. Who are your top three screenwriters?

11. Who are your top three composers?

And for number 12, a more subjective question:

12. What is, in your estimation, your most obscure movie?

Psychos in Love by far. There is a wider release version in Germany I believe, but the version I have is limited to 200 copies and doesn't have a UPC code, just disc ID ( I5AD380E42903F340 ).
Following behind are Man Bites Dog and Thursday. I'm sure I have some rarer discs than these, but the movies are obsure enough that many don't know of them.

And for number 12, a more subjective question:

12. What is, in your estimation, your most obscure movie?
Sheesh! That's a hard one. I guess it's some Dutch or Belgian dvd, like "3 Films by Elbert van Strien", "Aaltra" or maybe "Noi Albinoi" from Iceland. I guess there are just a handful of people that have "Fanfare Ciocarlia: Story of the band", so that might qualify as obscure. Cool question, but hard to answer!
