I decided since I am of Prussian/German decent and want to learn it anyways, I am going to try to learn German.  Unlike when I took Japanese in high school, I figure genetics should be on my side this time.

What I was wondering is this.  Does anyone have any experience with rosetta stone software?  Wondering if it is any good.

I always thought you were German  (because of your typically German last name).

I'm also of Prussian/German decent.  I lived in Germany as an army brat from 81-84 but my recollection is limited to counting to 12, a few polite phrases, and a lot of cursing.

So you are all set - what more could you possibly need?

I am at least half German (we don't know my mom's father's heritage).  After that mostly Norwegian.
I just don't speak it and want to.  Makes it easier to understand the music I listen to.

So you can order 2 beers each for you and your five friends and after drinking it tell the waiter in a polite manner that it tasted like pee and was warm too. That's more than any German would expect of a foreign tourist and suffices for a trip from the coast to the alps.

EDIT: And you probably don't even have to pay your beer!
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I am Belgian French and thought genetics would help.  It doesn't.  Then again the older you are the harder it is to learn a new language.  I started seriously in my 30's way to late in my opinion.  I have heard very good things about Rosetta, give it a try.  As for other languages, in French, Italian and Spanish I can order a complete meal including alcohol, find a bathroom and get in a fight.

I've heard a friend using Rosetta and he was pretty content with the software.

I am learning (expanding?) German because my gf is Austrian. I am kinda learning Austrian instead of German for that matter

I heard it brings along concentration problems. You get distracted a lot.

I have heard about the Rosetta Stone language programs for years, but have yet to meet anyone with direct hands-on experience.  It was my understanding that the US Government used Rosetta Stone to get employees up fluency quickly (diplomatic corps, CIA, etc.)  But that may not be a very good endorsement.

German is somewhat complicated for english speaking people. The most complicating thing is that we have three articles (der die das) instead of one (the) and they are not used in a very logic way.
Then there is the formal/informal thing (sie/du), illogical declinations, conjugations etc.

In other words, the german language is happy funtimeed up beyond repair.

On the other hand, you had japanese lessons so you might already be accustomed to that.

It isn't fubar, it's just grown naturally.

A german sentence that doesn't need three lines and two commas is not a german sentence at all.

I'm doomed
One - I just realized the cost of rosetta stone software, but still thinking of giving it a shot.
Two - Though I took Japanese, it made my head hurt

Maybe I will go the Red Dwarf route and learn Esperanto

I read somewhere in an unverified website that could be true or false that Esperanto is on the decline.

Do you know anybody speaking Esperanto??
If I'm not totally wrong this was an artificial language invented as a universal communication solution. Which is quite funny, because what is English if not the universal language of the world (at least for the next 10 years)?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?
