So, it's been going for a while, thought it was time to put up a poll and see what the reaction to the system has been....

And, what type of things do people get positives/nagatives for?  I'm still waiting to get one either way

Cheers
Tom

THIS was a comment

Well, I consider this ambivalent. I'ts obvious, that the behavior of some users in the forums get much better than before. But what I really don't like is the possibility of giving unjustified negative votes.

I would prefer to personalize the votes (positive and negative). I think it's chicken-hearted to hide behind anonymity when giving bad votes. How can this help the receiver to change his behaviour?
In contribution votes it is mandatory to give reasons for bad votes and you can see the username of the voter as well - why not in the reputation system?

Because of eBay. Negative votes combined with names result in retaliation votes.

I don't think that this is a valid reason. Ken said, that he will monitor vendettas and takes action if necessary

I keep my position: anonymity makes it much easier to give unjustified negative votes. Otherwise the voters would think twice to give negatives. If I would follow your argumentation, contribution votes should be anonymized as well. Someone who got a negative contribution vote can now very easy take revenge by giving a negative vote on the referring contribution note and can snipe in the forums as well.

But as you said, Ken will monitor these. He who gets unjustified votes can complain to him. If he actually sees who voted on him, he could feel compelled to take matters into his own hand, which in turn would mean more work for Ken, because instead of having one unjustified votes he now has two.

O.k. DJ Doena, you have a point. But I know from my personal experience, that an unjustified negative wasn't removed. Complaint was futile! I'm pretty sure that some other users have similar experiences. I can understand this, because Ken cannot permanently monitor for this.

Last but not least it's a kind of philosophical question if a reputation system can substitute a moderator

I've been lucky so far, I haven't got any neg votes until now.

But if you would know the voter. What exactly would you do with that information. You could PM him, but what if he doesn't take it back?

And you've got yourself a gold star which means who have been voted pos quite a few times.

No, I wouldn't PM him! But I'm pretty sure that he hadn't voted no, if he had to justify this without hiding behind anonymity!

The sort of things are discussed in this thread, here:

... and you'll need a lot more than one or two to make any change to status, BTW... I think I'm on about +13 (no negatives) at the moment and it still rates "Normal"... not that it worries me, just I wonder occasionally how many it needs

You'll need about 25 positives for an elevated rating.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

It surprises me people were able to answer the poll, because I have no clue what it's about. Reputation, Contributions, Movie Ratings...

AMEN! I have almost 600 positive feedbacks on eBay and 3 negatives and 2 of the 3 were retaliation feedback. I am not saying that the same thing would happen here ... but you never know.

But still I'd prefer a possibility to comment on a negative vote, it would even give the moderators a hint whether it's justified or not. For the user that gets the negative mark it still can be anonymous but with the comment.
