There has been something posted in the other forum ( General: General Home Theater Discussion -> Toshiba to pull the plug? (HD-DVD Deathwatch) ), but it is still unofficial...

This is still very muddy water and i don't think the "war" is over yet. In terms of hardware sales the two formats are splitting the market. In terms of software sales BD leads with approximately 60%. However, Sony is getting all excited over BD software sales of 8.3 Million, which when put up against DVD software sales of 1.1 Billion isn't even a drop in the bucket. So, I think we have a ways to go yet.

But comparing SD DVD sales to HD disc sales (HD DVD or Blu-ray) is like comparing apples and oranges.

True that SD DVD sales are still extermely high, but what were SD DVD sales compared to VHS or Laser?

Unless the SD DVD format is killed, HD won't go anywhere.

I could care less which format wins it really, HD still doesn't offer the same leap that DVD had over VHS. I have no burning need to upgrade anytime soon.

Watch a rather dark movie and then look for the mpeg artifacts in the darker tones.

Once you notice them, you never can't notice them.  I'll corrupt you yet!

I strongly disagree with his comments on the audio/video quality differences. Contrary to what this guy says, the two formats are (currently) very much the same.

I wont disagree with his comments on the extras but that is more dependent on the studio than the format so BD can't be blamed for that.

"Because just like that original format war, when an inferior technology beat out the other, it's happening again. I've spent some quality time with both Blu-ray and HD DVD, looking at picture quality and additional capabilities. I believed the Samsung combo Blu-ray/HD DVD player could again be the product of the year since it eliminated the need for a tough consumer choice. Watching discs on that slick device from both formats, the quality difference is clear: HD DVD is clearer, the sound seems better, the extras are sweeter."

"But alas, pay no mind: HD DVD will go the way of Beta; fading off into oblivion; eclipsed by Blu-ray."

You're using old numbers. Blu-rays software has 65% of the total market since inception, and holds 76% of discs sold in 2008.

As for hardware, recent sales trends have Blu-ray at 65% and HD DVD players at 28% (the rest being combo units).

But no Blockbuster, no Netflix, no Best Buy, no Wal-mart, no Sony, no FOX, no WB, no Disney (and if you look at new releases lately, no Universal and no Paramount either)....it's over.

Agreed.  When Warner's flipped, I decided it was time to go purple.  I figured that would be the end of HD DVD, and I've seen nothing to change my mind on that.  Now with the latest Best Buy, Netflix and Wal-Mart news, I think it's pretty clear.

That makes no sense to me.  What arrow would you let fly?

And regardless of arrows or anything else that makes more sense, I think the downward slide is too steep and Toshiba already has too much momentum.  I fail to see how they can pull out of this one.  I think they've passed the event horizon and at this point all hope is lost.

And I say this as someone who owns both formats and preferred to see HD DVD win this thing.

The only hope for HD-DVD is if two or more major studios backed HD-DVD over Blu-Ray.

However, business are in business to make money.  With all the big hitters and supporters falling in line behind Blu-Ray, it's just bad business to pick the losing side.
