I hope you have 2 to 3 TB minimum of hard drive for your collection.

And loads of time!
With estimated 20 minutes per DVD it will take you 12 days of nonstop ripping
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Make sure whatever process you use preserves the 5.1 sound.  Many techniques leaves you with stereo.

What I want to know is how HOT would the HOT Button be, maybe 1200 Degrees F

I fact I like that idea, couple that with 50KV keyboard and WOW!

Luckily you don't need to sit there and watch it rip.  I have nearly 2000 DVDs ripped at this point - when I buy a new batch, I just throw the discs in the drive one at a time, type in the title, and I have a script that does the rest.  The disc ejects when it's finished, and I pop in the next one.

Buy this for your storage and let me know how well it works

Pick up any small 4 drive RAID case and replace the drives with 1TB drives.  I did that and saved over $400.  There's plenty of empty 2 drive RAID cases that you can drop a drive into, just make sure it has a LAN port.

Here's a good solution for home use. The case is about € 380,- (in Germany) + HDDs.

This seems reasonably in-expensive (-ish). Network-only (no firewire, etc.). I'm thinking of getting one just for machine backups ...

It's a little scary to me, as long as I have been dealing with computers and I won't admit how long that is but it's a loooooong time ago, that I am looking at machines that run 16GB RAM and TB's of storage.<shakes head>Not to mention 512MB video cards. Good lord, that's almost as much as the first generation Crays were, on your DESK, not a whole freakin' room.

I feel your pain, Skip... I coped with getting Gigabytes worth of data on that tiny SD card but when I saw 8Gb Micro-SD cards I just gave up... I mean 8Gb... in a bit of plastic that I find it hard enough to see, let alone get the fiddly little git into my mobile phone!
