My collection is growing rather quickly since I discovered the used section at Newbury Comics, the local record and dvd store near my work. I find myself in there at least twice a week pulling out bargains at 2.99 to 5.99 each. The local blockbuster at my house I can pick up current releases a few months after they are released used. With my membership the price is 3 for 20.00. For all of you who have not discovered this second hand meca of digital delights... It is a great way to grow your collections.

I buy my used DVDs from SecondSpin.
Almost all of them are in near mint condition, And as a bonus - sometimes you can get a brand new copy for the same price. That's just laughable ! (and not to mention, cost effective).

By far the prices I pay at Newbury Comics are the lowest. Almost all the titles I purchased in June came from there. I averaged under 5.00 per title. The discs are mint and guaranteed. They take them in from the local rental stores as well as purchase them from customers bringing them in.

The vast majority of my DVDs were bought used... blockbuster's occasional sales are awesome, but their regular prices aren't bad either. But, here in Chicago we have tons of used music/movie stores - and some of them even let you haggle (evil grin). And sometimes something kind of rare comes in and the people who works there has no idea what it is, so they just throw it into the cheap discount bin...  I love used DVDs...

I picked up If A Man Answers yesterday and Support Your Local Sheriff. 3.99 each. In the bargain used section.

I've gotten quite a few awesome deals ... not sure which was the best deal, though... maybe the entire Lord of the Rings triology, extended versions, for $15 - disks were in mint condition, however none of them came with the little informational booklets. (But, that's ok. I rarely read 'em anyway.)

There is a local rental place near me (not a major company) that sells a few used dvds. They sell newer releases for $10 each and as they get older it drops down to $7 then $5 and then cheaper.

The really good thing is that they sell them in their original case with any inserts and including the slip cover. The bad thing is that they have stickers and with the snappers I can't remove the stickers at all, so I don't buy snappers from there.

Just this weekend I went to a local rental store and they had buy one get one free deal for all used dvd's.  I got some newere movies for essentially 7 bucks a piece.  Not bad I think.

You should look for a product called GooGone. It's great for removing sticker off stuff and doesn't damage the item. I found out about it from a toy collector who used it to remove price stickers off the packaging.

I've used GooGone as well.  It's great for getting stickers of my used purchases, but the 'scent' can get overwhelming sometimes.

I've only bought 3 used discs.  They were all out of print titles:
Silence of the Lambs - Criterion
The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Criterion
From Hell: 2 disc Limited Edition

I've seen the condition of the rentals I've gotten.  There's no way I'd be buying from places like that.

I can say that every used disc I have bought, the discs were always in mint condition. I always look though before purchasing.

Bill makes a great point.  If you are going to buy used, be picky.  I bought the majority of my James Bond films (Special Edition) after they went out of print.  We have a few used DVD places here in town and I scoured them to get the best copies possible.  Needless to say buying used is like buying on Ebay, be careful scrutinize the people you are doing business with and most of the time you'll come out on top.

I use a local chain called "Movie Trading Company". They always make sure the discs are clean and redable. The only problem is getting the insert is hit and miss. They even off .99 cent DVDs that have no cover, just in a simple see through case and the name on the case.

I have bought about a dozen from them in the last two years. Finding Kenenth Branagh's Hamlet Special Edition for $9.98 used was a dream come true.
