Here's an amusing article from 1996, discussing in some depth why the DVD format is doomed.

LINK

Here are a couple of quotes:

"DVD movies are supposed to have features such as multiple aspect ratios, and different languages and ratings and subtitles. There is really no true hope that any of these features will come to pass on general releases."

"it doesn't record, therefore, it is crippled and worth less than VHS"

"And now we get into THE most controversial aspect of the entire DVD debate. PICTURE QUALITY, or the lack there of."
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world because they'd never expect it." - Jack Handey

Somebody should ask Stereo Boy what he thinks now.     His analysis was ridiculous in 1996, and is even more so in hindsight.

But I do recall, that was a pretty common sentiment amongst the LD fanboys back in the day.  Even after DVD was introduced, they clung to it for a while, but once anamorphic enhancement and new transfers (not recycled LD transfers) became common, they all gave up.  Finally.

I have to confess that as an LD aficionado I was worried that DVD might become a barebones format aimed solely at Joe Sixpack, and that the extras that we had been used to on LD was a thing of the past.

I never made any predictions, though, and I never would. I'm never that sure of myself...

I'm just glad that my concerns were unfounded.

I love this part, especially since studios have done what he says they won't and it seens almost every movie these days has an unrated release:

"And just where are these differing versions (read:ratings) of films going to come from? A director shoots a film, and in the vast majority of cases, the movie is finished at the rating the director aimed for. Additional scenes are not shot and edited to make differing rating versions of a film. Are the studios going to call back entire casts and crews to revise a film so they can produce a DVD version with differing ratings? If they don't, will the studio elect to do it themselves and edit without the directors approval? I don't think so... This argument alone is enough to shoot the whole "features" aspect of DVD right out the window."

Wow, and I thought Nostradamus would feel stupid.  This guy made some pretty wild claims.  First of all I have read many articles which attribute the failure of BETA to the porn industry choosing VHS as its primary medium, not the recording ability.  He had some good points about laser.  The technology wasn't perfect and there were way too few titles.  DVD got movie backing from the beginning and if I remember correctly had more than 250 titles when the first players were released.  I wonder if this guy ever wrote an article saying he was wrong.

With porn so easily available on the internet, it unfortunately didn't have quite the influence (read: zero) it did back in the VHS days.  Plus, have you actually seen porn in HD?  You will see things you will wish you could un-see.  They should have just stayed out of the HD arena all together.

Having a large laserdisc collection at that time, I also listened to a lot of naysayers who compared early DVDs to LDs as proof that LD was still superior.  As we all know DVD mastering and DVDs players vastly improved and now, in HDTV, laserdiscs look like a UHF feed.
So when some criticized early HD-DVD or BluRay discs as a "negligible improvement" against high quality DVD masters, I knew I'd heard this all before.
