| Posted: | | | | Forgive me for being stupid, but is their any real need for parsing? Would it not make everything easier if it was just one field for the full name? This is an honest question as I have a feeling I'm missing something totally |

| Posted: | | | | This has been asked before and, if memory serves, has always been shot down because going to a single field would cause us to lose the 'sort by last name' ability. Ken seems to agree that it is an important feature.

Which is something i don't understand, at least why anyone wants/needs this. Do people really go through the actors list in profiler. Dont you just type in the actor you need (because of interest of for profiling purposes) and than you find him, regardless of parsing/sorting issues? I asked this before but never really got an answer from anyone. Paul |

I asked this before but never really got an answer from anyone. That'll be because there is no good answer. Parsing really only has brought us pointless multiple, non-linking entries for virtually EVERY name in the database consisting of more than two parts. It's sole purposes seem to be: (a) to break linking, and (b) to cause endless debates over what is the "correct" parsing of any given individual (fine example here). And there's no sign of improvement: the fact that several years (!) after the initial discussion there are still plenty of H/B/C entries in the database shows as much. And that's about the one name of which we've all actually agreed on the parsing.... | | | Last edited: by T!M |
