should we accept an update where someone has gone to the trouble of adding all the year of birth. As this was only for differentiating between actors with the two same names?
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

There was another submission where the person did the same thing. He had misinterpreted the purpose of the new feature. A polite PM to him took care of it.

As I understand it you are correct. It is only to be used when two actors share the same name, and then there will have to be some sort of documentation to prove what the proper DOB is.

I would PM the person and see what they have to say.

What does it hurt to add the DoB? As i understand, its a new field, all fields has some sort of purpose, the more information we add the better in my opinion.

I agree.  If the fileds get populated now, it could help prevent confusion or issues in the future especially if you are added cast to a new movie and don't know which one to use.

@ Whispering,  that is my feeling also.

@ Giga Wizard, if it was R1 1941 or some of the R2s that I submitted, I have pulled them back and then just submitted stuff without cast/crew updates

@ Lyonsden5, that is the key, a "polite PM", I had received several of these and for that reason I pulled the contribs back.

I also received a PM that was written in a way to force me into a corner like a rat and put me on the immidate defensive......  the old standard statement, that I was abusing the on-line database for my own personal use and that I didn't care about the community....

Well for now, it will be just for me.....

I don't know if it hurts anything to have them in there. I know in the other thread it was pointed out that the rules have been revised to say this about it:

Quote:
It is generally not necessary to add birth year for actors as you add them to DVD Profiler. Use the birth year to differentiate between two actors with the same name.

Someone who has done some more editing with this field, Ken or Gerri will have to answer if it hurts to have them in.

If they are to be added again I should point out that some sort of documentation would need to be provided for the information given. Just what is acceptable documentation would depend on the person voting at this point, since it is not spelled out in the rules as of yet.

No, I think Ken and Gerri have made it very clear what the PURPOSE of the BY is. If you can change their mind that's another story. But the BY is simply to distinguish between two like names.

Ron:

You tried to point out that the information was referred to as Optional, which translates into local data. Now if you want to get to the issue of your documentation, it was very weak, you used a single source with no other supporting documentation to try to throw up a BY for an entire cast list, I always will use at least two sources personally because I don't trust any SINGLE source.

That's all well and good Skip but no where does it even address what documentation is acceptable. What is acceptable to you is not the same as acceptable to everyone. Unacceptable to you doesn't make it wrong either.

FWIW - the purpose of BY is very clear however it is not clear at all if this information could or should be added before it is required, which is what some here have expressed a desire to do.

It could use some confirmation and or a clarification from Ken

[whistles] Oh Ken.

Oh I am not arguing the aspect that users want to do it, at all, Rick and if Ken wants to do it that's fine. I am only addressing that, at this time, Ken and Gerri's statement has been clear and we go no further until they change it.

I would say that until some clarification is forthcomming, we should reject any BY information, since AIUI, the NAME+BY will be a master name in the db. If people contribute the same person with different BYs, won't that create 2 master names?

Hello Skip,

you wrote: ", I always will use at least two sources personally because I don't trust any SINGLE source."

In my contribution I wrote: "Added birth year for several actors (verified on both Wikipedia & NNDB)"

I also verified some a third time in IMDB but not all so I didn't add that to the comments.

And, maybe I am as weak in the English language as I am with Deutsch.

But the word Optional to me means Optional, use it if you want but not a required field but also not forbidden....
You already made it clear that it is against your interpretation, so I will NOT contribute it any more.

For me the issue is closed, lets all start off great again  ;-)
