Betting on your own sport is a conflict of interest. Suppose you bet on your own team to lose and you help the team out by throwing the game?

I am sorry but taking drugs to enhance your ability during a game is just as bad as betting upon the game.  Both leave a dirty scar upon the sport of baseball and I am appalled that any commisioner can scorn one offense and ignore the other!!!

I was just about to add that, Skip.

We can all take a bit of comfort that A Rod will eventually break this record. I just wish we didn't have Bonds, and the other cheaters like him taking credit for something others have done without the "boost".

I hope A Rod does just that however the odds are against him!!!  Jimmie Foxx broke 500 when he was 32 as well, however he finished with only 534 home runs!!!

You both are saying the same thing and I completely agree. Either toss Bonds out or reinstate everyone.

Drugs do wonderful things.

Steroids may increase muscle mass but no matter what type of steroids one may use, they can't give you the skill and timing to hit a homerun ball .

All the skill and timing in the world won't help you a bit if you ain't got the juice to hit the ball hard enough to get it there.  Steroids gave him that edge.

The original record was set using pure skill and no chemicals.  Bond's record is meaningless in that light.

That makes it even worse. The "original record" was set by Babe Ruth and if anything, his "juice" (alcohol) made it more difficult to do any of it. That is one of the things I like about Hank Aaron, no "juice" and no alcohol. As far as I know, he was a clean player and well deserves to be set alone.

There is a very easy way to force baseball (or any other sport for that matter) to clean up its act on the field, and in the locker room.  If you are against players using drugs, then boycott the game.  Hurt the owners in the back pocket, and you'll see them crack down on the players abusing drugs, cheating, etc.

The perfect example of that is the old Black Socks scandal.  Between fans and sports writers those guys never lived that down, and the game was better for it.

As the saying goes, "those who do not learn from history, are doomed to repeat it."

They haven't seen any money from me in several years (about 8 now).

I am thinking that it's finally time to get those old baseball cards out and sell them too. Does anyone think there's a market for a few cheater, er..., I mean Bonds rookies?

Ruth - and probably 90% of the players back then - didn't have a workout regimen. Ruth certainly wasn't in the best of shape physically. And that to makes what he did amazing.

You're correct Dan. Alcohol certainly didn't help Ruth's hand/eye coordination at all. In a certain sense, he wasn't cheating like they do today. This stuff today isn't called "performance enhancing drugs" for nothing. Sure Bonds has the coordination and that, but his real power comes from supplemental effects.

On ESPN today (it might have been a repeat from last night) they showed Bonds' home run records from the past years, and also what his physical condition was. After McGwire and Sosa "beat" Maris' record, the next year Bonds looked at least twice as big, and then started really smacking the ball out of the park. I don't care who you are: you can't bulk up that much from October to April naturally. And they said Bonds was certain for the Hall of Fame before 1998. If he would have just kept going that way, he would have been a shoe-in for the Hall. Now if he gets in, it's a pity. His ego screwed up his legacy.

I was always hoping that Ken Griffey, Jr would have beaten the record. There was much talk of it years ago, and then he just got hurt too many times.

Well, actually "American football" is not the most popular sport in the world. That honor belongs to what us Americans call Soccer. It just happens that the rest of the world calls "soccer," football.
