From what I've read, Notify only would still have nested you an automatic stealth update. The only way to be free of this update, is to disable automatic update altogether.

That is EXACTLY what happens, and that has been verified by several independent testing groups.


Another thing that has come to light is some of the fallout from this:  Many people have restore disks that use 'image' type restore processes.  If you use the restore disc, it wipes out everything and returns the PC to the condition it was when it first came out of the box.  Of course, that means that in order to apply updates that have come out since then, you have to log onto WindowsUpdate and download all that stuff.  But, now that doesn't work because Microsoft's site won't allow you do download unless you have that stealth fix in place.  This has also been verified by numerous sources.
