I have to agree that if the sticker is ON the case and not the shrink-wrap, it should be included as it is clearly intended to be part of the case.  Probably was added as an after-thought and used a sticker to prevent the loss of having to re-print covers.

I have had DVDs with crap like "Best this year!!!" stickers right on the case, some with Grip of death glue that required a new case to get rid of them. If they wanted it to be on the cover, it would be ON the cover. If it's a sticker it's marketing puff.

Peel off the sticker, toss it.
Tom.

Not to play devil's advocate, but my Best Buy steelbooks of Grindhouse, Planet Terror and Death Proof both, had stickers (on shrinkwrap) that said "Limited Edition". Nowhere on the case does it say LE, but they still have the LE in the edition field.
All the submissions were like this and they were approved. So the question I'm getting to is it aceptable to use a sticker to distingush a different edition? Or was that just because it was known to be a LE so the sticker played no part?
Either way it makes sense to me.

Just noticed my Departed steelbook from BB (also a LE) doesn't have anything in the title field, but can't recall if it had a sticker....
I'll wait for a concencus before adding an edition and submitting, maybe the Grindhouses should have them removed?

Sometimes the Edition Information is only displayed on the Spine, Back Cover, Disc Label and/or Main Menu. Any of these possibilities including an original sticker are all valid if it can be used to distinguish a certain release from other releases.

For me (as I said) that's the big one... if there is no other edition I wouldn't use sticker info, if there is another edition and te possibility of a mix-up because theer is otherwise no difference in the cover wording I would go with sticker/rear/etc. info

Only problem with that approach is you might end up with a significant time span between the original release with a sticker proclaiming SE or such, and a later sticker-less version. Unless you're one of the few people leaving stickers on the cases (or even adding them from the shrink wrap to the case or store them on a pice of paper inside the case - I've seen all this before...) the information on the sticker might be lost or you might have a hard time to document it properly.

Why do people remove the original stickers?

Probably because they feel it covers up the art work.

I'm in the "no sticker" camp.  If the edition information was so important to the manufacturer, then they would have printed it on the cover, not some cheesy sticker that's likely to eventually wear off.

I always remove stickers as the glue often loses it's "gluing traits" and falls off but at that time the glue has made a big ugly fatty mark on the cardboard of the sleeve(or digipack). Sometimes if the sticker is "important" to the release i glue it on a pice of paper and put it inside the box. (happened like 3 times in 1100 titles or so).

Funny you should bring this up.

I contributed scans for SANTA CLAUS 3 which clearly had a sticker on the slip case and got NO votes because I did not remove it.

Damned if you do ... damned if you don't.  Go figure.

No wonder we have such a time getting contributions straight.

I always vote No to ANY and all stickers, they are ugly and obviously installed on the package by hand. There is no uniformity of position, wherever the worker feels like putting it. On top of that, would we then leave the Made in Mexico sticker which is so prevalent.

Its not hard at al MW, simply look before you leap.

If you look at the sticker on the first page, it's clearly machine placed.  I seriously doubt any person getting paid minimum wage to stick a sticker on thousands upon thousands of DVD cases would bother to get it lined up so well.

I would say it depends on what the sticker says. If it contains information relevant to the profile (such as in the Lost World example) I would say that's a valid reason to keep the sticker visible.
If however it's generic advertising stuck on the front of most new releases, then a clean scan would be better.

Now we get to get into, attempting to define "relevant to profile" I have yet to see any sticker, even the ones that may say something such as "Collector's Edition" which is relevant. If it was really relevant to the product they would have not used a sticker.

"Collector's Edition" may be relevant to Edition, if there isn't anything else to distinguish editions.

Maybe. Maybe not. It also depends on how you define "relevant".

Ok, stickers are mainly marketing. But then, it can be marketing even if it's printed on the case.

"Ok, stickers are mainly marketing. But then, it can be marketing even if it's printed on the case."

Let us all say a quick prayer that it never comes to marketing printed on the cover. I know that there is plenty already, all "unrated" means anymore is a buzzword for "buy this disc", unrated sells more so we'll throw in one deleted scene, not submit to MPAA, and call it something different (at least Live Free of Die Hard brought enough F bombs for me to feel like it was worth being called unrated, although if it had been submitted for rating I'm sure it was a soft R at best).
Now if those stickers saying "save $1 on M&M's, see inside" start getting printed we are all in trouble. Soon our (R1 users that is) will be worse than those insanly huge ratings on U.K. covers, as they will just be a bunch of ads with a small box holding the cover of the actual movie thrown on in place of one last ad.
