Personally, I've used OpenDNS for a while. I found them while my ISP was having from DNS problems, and never looked back.

What I like is that I can block out sites which I don't want the kids to visit, and also how you can set special keywords to automatically open some sites. It's been a long while since I've last had to type in "google.com" and then enter my query, now, I just type "go <whatever>" and that's it.

Ok, I know this functionality is built into Firefox and I don't need OpenDNS to do it, but still.

Since the DNS servers I use I've setup myself and they are located in the next room. I don't think OpenDNS can improve my internet performance

I used OpenDNS for a few days but did not find it any faster.  I've used TreeWalk DNS for years and it really is the best solution for me.  The OP's comment about having to install a service and using memory etc is irrelevant to me.  My desktop serves up DNS lookups for all the PCs on my network and it does so reliably and extremely fast.

You know your ISP has problems when a server that is 10+ hops from your computer is faster than one that should be no more than 5 hops away.

Hi All,

Jafo - I've used Treewalk inthe past, it's main advantage I found was its surviorable casche. It's downfall was it starts with windows, requires a service.

OpenDNS - has many other advantages porn blocking, anti phish etc see opendns.com

PC Magazine issue dated 12/25/2007 page 90 - The editor recommends opendns, also opendns does not proxy - so theres no hiding of identities.

I don't care about TreeWalk running as a service.  As a Windows developer I have one of my own services running too.

I do not need or want another server messing around with my DNS requests.  I go to sites that I trust, and when I don't (extremely rare) I do so at my own risk.  If I had kids and needed that extra protection, MAYBE... But I also turn off the anti-phishing crap in IE and Firefox as well... Not for me.

Thanks for the tip...unfortunately what I really need is to have the crappy phone lines in my house replaced.  The people I bought the place from were do-it-yourselfers who had no idea what they were doing when it came to phone lines.  Even with DSL the fastest I can download is about 40K/s.      I don't really have any idea even who to talk to about doing that, though.

Well pulling new phone line shouldn't be too hard depending on how comfortable you are with that kind of thing...you can use the existing line to pull the new line through. Though if you want it done professionally any company that does network wiring can probably do it, or it might be under the jurisdiction of an electrition. Either way, if you call one of the two they would probalby be able to point you in the right direction as far as what type of company (and possibly a specific company) you would need to contact for that.
