You know how collectors are, they willingly pay mor than 2 million US$ for a little stamp which you can't even use anymore. Compared to this 5.ooo for a useless disk is quite a bargain. I don't collect stamps any more, but I seem to recall some are so rare that even if they are cancelled collectors still consider them valuable. Maybe not $2million but much more than $5k. I don't know about any other countries, but as Max said, any US stamp is still valid postage. Though why anyone would use an expensive collectible stamp on a current letter is probably a kid who got into his dad's stamp collection. The same is true for US Currency and coinage - it's still valid at face value, no matter how old it is. At least the US Government considers it valid.
