As for new movies (after I decide that I really need it and will watch it more than once), I go go with the high def option if available (and BR over HD as I have both).  If the new movie doesn't have a high def release these days, it has to really appeal to me before I buy it in standard DVD.
(I have a lot of movies I don't watch so these days I am more cautious of what I buy).

As for replacing existing movies with high def versions, I have only done it with some of the movies I really enjoy and feel would benefit from the high def.  Things like Transformers and 300.

Still not onboard any HD wagon yet, but when I do I imagine I'll start buying most new releases on HD. No way in hell I'm going to replace all my dvds either. Some films that will benfit will get upgraded, most of my old horror won't.

I was lucky and started collecting WS VHS just before getting a dvd player. I think I only had about 20 tapes, all of which have been replaced by dvds although I still have about half of the tapes. Sold a few and gave a couple away. Sucks to think I paid more for most of those WS VHS than the loaded dvds I replaced them with. Just glad I didn't get into laser until it got cheap after dvd hit.
