Death... and taxes here in the states it would be common that you only pay property tax if you own the property, therefore if you rent, your landlord pays the property tax and all you pay is rent | | | | -JoN |

Yep, clever little trick by landlords though wasn't it... Years ago we had Rates which were based on the worth of the property and for 99% of rental properties the landlord did pay the rates. Then in came the Community Charge (aka Poll Tax - and I am NOT going into the fairmess/right/wrongs argument here!) which, because it was paid per person NOT per property , meant that it was inappropriate for landlords to be able to pay the charge because they certainly weren't going to pay more if you decided to but 4 students in a house instead of one IT consultant. However the rental prices didn't drop of course, to make up for this... the landlord just pocketed his saving.  Then we changed to Council Tax, a system based on the worth of the property, just like the old rates but guess what... landlords had got quite happy with not paying the rates so they decided that occupants must pay rent and also pay the Council Tax for the building...  | | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |

Not all property is real (like in real estate) property. Property can include equipment, like automobiles, computers, televisions, etc. Some states levy property tax on automobiles (Virginia did it and there was a big political fight over whether or not to repeal that tax). | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole)

You should read more in the paper besides the Television section -- and watch more on TV than programs. Where were you during Maryland's special legislative session that happened a couple of months ago -- when Martin O'Malley, Mike Bush and company raised a whole lot of taxes (including adding to sales tax computer services)?
