Because it's very possible all the critics just love it to jump on the "we have to hype the poor dead guy" bandwagon. You seem to be on it too, looking at your avatar. Did you actually particularly like Heath Ledger back when he did flicks like The Patriot, Ten Things I Hate About You and A Knight's Tale?

I liked him back in the day.  'A Knight's Tale' was one of the first blu-rays I purchased.  If you look at his work then compared to what he did in Dark Knight, the nomination is well deserved...though I expect he wouldn't have gotten it if he were still alive.

What bugs me about the Oscars, and nobody in this thread has changed this opinion, is that they have an 'elitist' attitude.  They aren't really after the best picture, they are after the best picture that fits into their mold.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Every award competition or film festival is like that. If you look at what I own you will easilly see that I'm not an elitist, in fact I find most of the oscarized (??) movie boring. I don't let a bunch of old guys dictate me what I am suppose to like.

I just wanted to be clear that I never meant to imply that you were.  If you got that impression, I apologize.  I was refering to the Academy and the Academy only.

I personally prefer the BAFTAs for the reason that they appear to have a more inclusive view.

I was a little surprised that Gran Torino didn't get a nod.

Well, after the strong nominations last year, this seems to be a bit of a let down. But I'm happy that Richard Jenkins got nominated for The Visitor.

I for one was not very impressed with him in previous works. But he was the BOMB in Dark Knight . The work he did on that film deserves an Oscar nomination.

I totally agree with Max on this one. I didn't even consider him a credible actor before TDK, and with that performance he just dominated the movie for me.

That said, there were shades of acting talent shining through in Brokeback Mountain, in which he walked all over Jake Gyllenhaal's performance and completely overshadowed him.  I have to say though, it is my opinion itaht JG is one of the worst actors in the business today - with the only exception being his performance in Donnie Darko, where he is made for the part.

Me too.  I thought that was a sure thing---the omission of Doubt while virtually all the cast got acting nods strikes me as a little peculiar too.
