Since I am currently watching "Deep Space Nine" I ahve seen that screen at least five times that weekend.

But I "love" the multi-page screens even more where you can't find the country of purchase on the first page (e.g. UK). I often choose "Australia" simply because it's the first item in the list:

(Please note "Suisse", "Die Schweiz" and "La Svizzera" [all "Switzerland"] on the last two screenshots).

These screenshots are from the UK version "Two and a Half Men", Season 1.

I find it hard to believe that you are forced to select a language before you can click play.

Better believe it. Of course the clever way would be to read out the default-language the DVD-Player is set to, but especially Paramount UK seems to be to dumb for it. E.g. first thing you see once you pop in the Naked Gun DVD is:

just so they can annoy you with a copyright message in your language. After that it's either german menues with german default-audiotrack for "german" or english menues with english default-audiotrack for all the other 12 possibilities.

Now I have seen DVDs where this menue was even split to two screens because of the multitude of available languages, mix that with 4-6 different audiotraks and/or menues and you are in contribution hell.

cya, Mithi

This is true, however the dvd is localizated (Austria, France, Belgium...) and we could select the same locality langage on the first menu.

IMHO, we have only one sure info: the order showed on DVD Menu, no need of other softwares.

When you say you need no other softwares. How do you determine the type of the audio channnel like 5.1 or 3.0? And when you use your hardware player to determine that why not use the "audio" key on the remote to browse through the audio options?

And when you use the menu only what happens if the commentary track isn't available in the audio option but in the special features menu?

By the receiver.

Because I don't know if the result is the same for all the receivers.

Nothing... I list the commentary tracks always after the other audio tracks.

DVD Menus are hardly accurate half the time, and it's another reason the rules are as they are. I've seen Audio Menus on discs claiming a track is 5.1, when really it's 5.0, or actually even just stereo.

It is. That is exactly why the rule says what it does: it gives us a solid, fool-proof method to order the audiotracks, which is easy to determine for everyone, and there's no risk of different users coming up with different orders. There's no user preference involved whatsoever, and no problems with erroneous covers or DVD menus: we just take the data straight from the disc.

Of course you can do whatever you want locally. But if you're contributing that data as well, it would be much appreciated if you would follow the rule on this and list them in the order in which they are encoded on the disc.
