You just confirmed my suspision that there is a double standard in these forums.

I'm not so sure that's the case. I noticed that when you and surfeur were going at it, that he lost his star. So there had to be some red action in his direction too. Just an observation.

Don't the stars automatically go down over time anyway? It might not be that he received reds but just didn't get enough green to keep it there.

That could be the case. If so, it's ironic that it occurred at the same time, but it's possible.

I didn't know he had a star, so that might be true.  But my point still stands as I have never seen him get scolded for his indiscretions.  I have been, and I have seen other 'infamous' users get called out, while certain users are treated with kid gloves.

It may just be my perception, but I don't think it is.

In a totally unrelated topic, how many green arrows do you need to get a star? I've racked up dozens over a few months, one BS red, but still sit at "nothing happening" starting level.
Maybe it has to do with arrows per post? Most of mine are one per post, with a couple that have 3 or 4.

I believe it is a combination of arrows per post and unique arrows.  What I mean is, if one person regularly gives you green arrows, they don't count as much as they do from someone who only gives them to you once in a while.  The same, I believe, goes for red arrows.

This is totally from my experience but anecdotally, I think I got my first star when I had about 20-25 or so spread across a bunch of posts within a 30 day period. For the 2nd star, I had a post that went over 10 on that single post. Not exactly sure what the parameters are, or if they've changed, but that's just what I noticed.

I noticed my first star with around 30 green posts in a month and the 2nd star a few months later and averaging 15-30 green posts in a 30 day window.

The best thing if someone directs a personal slur against you is ignore it. Don't fan the fiames.

I think it is safe to say that people have a tendency to say things on the internet that which they would not say face to face.

I think that Ken's addition of a the flag system proves that some of the back and forth banter is rather  puerile. I would never waste my time giving red, although I have given a few greens to those pointing out any errors in my contributions.
We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.

For new people to the forums, the stars can help to identify users who are consistently considered to be helpful.

I believe that Surfeurs skin had been thick enough for quite a long time.

Personal attacks of the worst kinds came unto him

I very much agree. But beyond that, I fail to see why a thick skin is something that should be required. Why people can't just be civil towards one another is beyond me. It simply makes for an unpleasant atmosphere, and I for one fully understand why people might be turned off by the constant bickering and animosity that goes on here.

If this was a political or religious forum it would be understandable, if not condonable, but all we're doing here is talking about a hobby we all share. As such I would assume discussions would be pretty lighthearted. Yet the tiniest topic can bring out all kinds of heated arguments, attacks and defamations. I don't get it.

At first I just tried to ignore it and participate anyway, but it got tiresome very quickly. I think I found a good balance though, I visit once a week or so, check the Announcements and Plugins and other stuff like the headshot thread, maybe vote on a couple of submissions, and that's it. That way I can still get the latest news and developments without the annoyance. Then I just get my movie and DVD discussion fix in other forums.

Why?  I can tell you why.  People who fly off the handle at some relatively innocent remark exhibit a lack of tolerance of the opinions of others.  Don't forget that in an international forum such as this, many people do not understand the idiomatic use of another language.  A remark made in complete innocence by A may be completely offensive to B simply because B doesn't understand the idiom -- the vernacular -- of the other person, and vice versa.

Some people also have a problem dealing with truth because they may not have a press in their country that can disseminate anything but the government approved line.  There are other reasons as well.  The bottom line is that before you fly off the handle and take umbrage, consider the other's circumstances.  In other words, grow a thicker skin.

Well, if that's your perception, it is catching because I have the same perception.

This is my first post in QUITE a while, I don't get the fascination with these arrows, stars, triangles, circles etc...do away with them and focus more on the collections and upgrades of this great program. I can't even recommend this to anyone with all this bickering going on, he said, she said...who cares, just go to your rooms and stick you heads in a pillow and cry about it. Chances are this will also be my final post as well, I may stop in to "visit" to see if things have changed but I don't see that happening any time soon. I don't know any of you but after reading a few pages I really don't want to. It's a shame, this was the first forum I ever posted on (when it was intervocative) and I miss the good times.
