Saturday I had an MRI; Monday I saw a neurologist. The MRI showed that I'm a bear with very little brain. Actually, it seems that the MRI showed absolute normal brain activity and scarring, etc -- nothing to give a clue as to the cause of the seizure. The neurologist found that I have the beginnings of carpal tunnel syndrome and wants to send me for an EEG. He said there were two possibilities of action on my part toward the seizure: ignore it, hoping that I fall into the 80% of middle aged geezers who never have a second seizure, or take antiseizure medications to further reduce the odds of having one. Once a person has a second seizure, the odds raise to 70% to 80% of having a third. With me being 58 years old, working everyday, he felt that the second course of action was best. If I were 75 and didn't drive, ignoring the seizure would make sense. California requires doctors to report seizures and the DMV restricts driving (as in none) for a minimum of three months. So, I still cannot drive until the beginning of July at least. He put me on Keppra, which my initial reaction to the drug was pure depression... sad to live, sad to go to work, sad to help customers. Absolutely morose the first day I was on it. That passed rapidly -- now I'm just quieter than usual.

So my wife drives me to work every day; her sister picks me up and drives me home. My wife needs to drive my van to rehearsals and gigs, and the equipment to the church Sunday school play dress rehearsal and performance last weekend. I am dependent on others to get me anywhere I cannot walk.

And so it goes.

I really hope you're one of the 80% who don't get a second seizure. Glad to hear that everything seems normal according to the MRI and hope the 3 monthes pass quickly for you so you can get your independance back. Hopefully you'll get used to the medecine and your being quieter than usual might pass.

Best wishes for you Cliff

Thanks for the update, Cliff. Best wishes for continued improvement. Sorry to hear that the meds have been rough.

I know anti-seizure medicines are known for their "side-effects."

I once had a brilliant family doctor who told me that drugs do not have side effects. That everything we take (food, drink, medicine, recreational drugs) have both wanted effects and unwanted effects. That the effectiveness of what we ingest includes weighing the positive effects against the negative effects. That if we wish to get high, what we need is much different than if we want to be an effective surgeon or pilot, and vice versa.

What I need is to increase my odds of not ever having another seizure. If that causes me to feel a trifle sad for a day each time my dosage increases, that might just be a risk worth taking. So far, I've obeyed every suggestion every health professional has given me. It was a medicine-induced sadness, depression, perhaps, and I knew it was a possibility. I'm normally a non-stop talker, but I've become a listener... at least for now. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

I know now more than ever that nothing remains the same; that all things change. That I can only live for the moment, nothing later is promised to me. I can plan all I want, but life is what happens while I'm busy making other plans. I strive to become like the Daruma -- knock me down seven times and I sit up eight.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.
