This is not a matter to laugh about.

Reffering to the unatoned mortal offence, did you know that unfriendly person, meanie-weanie, unfriendly person and shiitake mushroom will be transformed into the same sequence of special characters, however bastard, jackass, puke and son of a bitch won't be transformed at all?

Also, quoting the post will show you what the censored words are, thereby negating the censor to an extent.

I also wouldn't censor "puke" as it's not actually swearing, just not very nice.

Good evening, Sirs,

after contributing a profile change to another locality, I received a private message
that began with "You are an unfriendly person."

Perhaps I'm too sensitive, but in my view XXX is rude and not the appropriate
language when discussing a contribution.

So I'd like to ask the moderators to monitor my incoming messages as well.

Love, bbbbb

If memory serves since I read the post before the moderator edited it, all that was done was to replace your hyphenated curse word with "XXX".  So in essence, it is your text.

Very interesting.  This sounds like bbbbb was trying to get around the profanity filter by using hyphenation.  That doesn't seem to me to be playing the game by the rules.

He was upset that someone called him XXX in a private message. Do make us understand why he was upset he bypassed the filter by using - - - in addition to a's and s's and h's and so on.... I have seen worse things in life and I understand where he was coming from.

If the profanity filter says 'hate' is a bad word, and I write 'h-a-t-e' to get around it, my post should be edited by the moderators.  To claim that the entire post came from the mod, simply because they did their job and removed the word, is just silly.  I am sorry, but it is.

Agreed. Someone tried something similar a few months ago regarding the film "happy funtimeing Åmål". It was censored so they bypassed it & the post was correctly edited.

You may well understand where he was coming from.  Actually, I understand why he felt that way, and probably would myself.  That does not excuse his deliberate attempt to circumvent the profanity filter.  There are rules that govern the way we are supposed to behave here.  Now that we have moderation, there is a way to handle someone who has gone around the automated tool.  And he isn't justified in blaming the Moderator for doing his job.

if all that has changed is that he stopped you deliberately trying to bypass the profanity filter then he was correct. And the text is still yours

And I'll repeat his comment - do not bypass the forum obscenity filter.

IMHO, the moderator could put something like [** word removed due to bypassing forum censorship **] in the future so users can't claim or hint that more was changed than really was.

True. You shouldn't bypass the filters.

But that's not really what the thread's about though, is it?

IMO there should be some kind of sanction available for the kind of behaviour bbbbb brought to our attention. A simple "ignore it and block the user" isn't good enough.

Screening PM's is going too far for my taste but being able to send a copy to a moderator mailbox shouldn't be too much to ask for. It's beyond me why public personal attacks should be adressed whereas private personal attacks are "your own problem". I think bbbbb's indignation seems to be perfectly justifiable and his post wasn't childish at all. It wasn't an attack on anyone in particular and it raises an interesting question.

Also it might raise the awareness of those of us who tend to be "overenthousiastic" in our choice of language that just because you can offend people doesn't mean you have to.

bbbbb, might I suggest that one way to stop people sending you abusive pm's is that you stop repeatedly submitting minor alterations to the same titles constantly. In the past month you have submitted 8 contributions to the UK DVD of the Living Daylights, usually just adding one crew member at a time. You told me last week that you were going to stop doing this but, lo and behold, this morning there's yet another contribution from you. Trying to get your contribution count up? Why? It's not a competition.

And in case anyone is wondering - no, it wasn't me who sent him the pm that this thread is about.
