Any wonder Coppola never trusted Paramount to remaster the godfather films.

Obviously the mastering for "Gladiator" was done by Universal (not Paramount), as Jeff Kleist from The Digital Bits pointed out.

As I pointed out in the other string on the Gladiator Blu-ray the reviews were negative that refereed to the Blu-ray  release. Over 200 negative reviews that referencd the Blu-ray, the positive reviews made no reference to the DVD release. By comparing the DVD reviews and Blu-ray reviews it seems that Amazon adds the reviews from the DVD version to the Blu-ray version.

But uf read carefully you see those reviews referencing the Blu-ray version say it sucks.

It is a shame that a person has to check a half dozen sites before buying a DVD.
I don't know how many times I had sit in meetings and mentioned that that product was not ready only to be over-ridden by the greed of sales and management. That is one if main reasons I retied early.

It is obvious that some greedy distributors are more concerned with getting something out the door than quality of their product.

The Sapphire Editions have some titles I might be interested in buying but...
Personally, I am going wait until more reviews are in especially from sites that have more professional reviewers.

If you keep buying their crappy reissues you just boaster their belief that we the consumers are don't care or don't know the difference.
We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.

I am not sure it is quite as simple as greedy distributors. Let's remember that when Gladiator was filmed Dreamworks was associated with Universal, today they are with paramount, but weven though Paramount distributed the=is version, the film is still controlled by Universal. I report...you decide. Draw your own conclusions.

I don't care who distributed the DVD, if they really cared about the quality of their products they put on the market place they should have had the guts to inspect and reject it.

It is what I call professional egotism, it's "I am the boss, I've got the degree or I’ve got the title." Why do we care we got the legal staff, the big bucks.

Why did the shuttle blow up, management ignored engineering advice, management thought they could make some political points. After all they are good at passing the buck. Did it harm the clown who made this decision, hell no, he could lie on television, that's great plus for today’s management position.

If I wrote down all times I've seen this type of managerial action it would consume volumes.

This type of actions occurs in every field; take the big drug cartel for example. Check out the history of Aspartame that was used to sweeten everything , just one instance, proven to be a dangerous drug, but its approval was forced to prove a political point. And we wonder why our children have learning disabilities.

Big business, big religion, big government doesn’t give a BRA about anybody but their park.

After all the media is all is owned by big corporations with the same agenda, so who is to investigate, find and report the real facts?  It is always an inanimate entity or the guy on the bottom that gets the blame, after all sh.. runs down hill. Oh well, on to the next rock star screw-up. That’s today’s news.

So if you don’t care about crap, and keep buying it, that is what you’ll get.

Here is another nice example of the ruined DNR use:

http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/index.php?lang=en&art=&image=2&vergleich=gladiator#auswahl

Just click on "1920x1080 Fullscreen Comparison" and use mouse-over to see the arrows or spears "disappear" in the background.

Blu-ray.com's review is up:
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=4735&show=review

It seems it's not a total disaster (and the blu-ray still looks better than the DVD), but it's also not the exmplary transfer people hoped for. It's clear that among those two, Bravheart got the better end of the transfer stick.

Still, might pick it up if ends in the bargain bin.

I don't know why people mention this as it should be a given fact for ALL high-def releases. It should be compared to other HD releases, not a decade old SD DVD. Or should we be grateful that it also beats VHS and laserdisc?

Indeed.  Better than the DVD?  It's got 6 times as many pixels, it damned well ought to.  The question is why the studios are content to deliver things that are "better than the DVD" but nowhere near as good as they OUGHT to be, and then charge $35 for the insult.

I guess if you watch a film frame by frame, you will hate this transfer.  I, on the other hand, watch films like a normal person, and didn't have a problem.  I knew that there were supposed to be missing arrows in the first battle secene but, there sure seemed to be a lot of arrows flying accross the the field of battle.  If they were missing, I couldn't tell.

As for the rest of the film...nothing mentioned in any of the reviews, that were supposed to be 'distracting', distracted me.  Was it the best HD transfer I have ever seen?  No, but it wasn't the worst either.  At $18, it was well worth the price of admission.

This matches my viewing experience as well, but I was afraid to post.    It was HD quality and an improvement over previous DVD versions I've owned.

I guess those watching this on a large screen and see distracting halos and lack of high deifinition detail must not be "normal"   then.

I'm not getting this.  I'll be patient and hope that they fix it and re-release it.  When there are too many movies and not enough time/money, I don't see the need to support this.  It's not like I'll have nothing to watch this weekend by skipping this.

I guess you missed the first sentence in my post.  Otherwise, it should have been obvious, that I was referring to the people who watch frame by frame looking for defects.  Had it not been pointed out, I doubt very seriously that anybody would have noticed the missing arrows.  Heck, I new they were missing and still didn't notice.

As to the rest, I think Blu-ray.com said it best:

"As is the case with every transfer on the market, different viewers with different eyes and different equipment with different sensitivities and different expectations will inevitably see the same transfer in a radically different light than another, and it's up to each individual viewer to judge the quality of a disc within their own set of parameters."

That's exactly what I did and I wasn't distracted in the least.

This is just my opinion obviously, but I don't think you should break the seal.  Instead I think you should spend that time working on 3.6 and the iPhone app.
