Many people made many great points in this posts and are hard to follow up without sounding like I am being bitter or complaining but I will try.  Some one made a great comment about testing the waters on whether or not a season will sell.  That is what the best of season fill in the blank is for.  Studios know if that sells well, it is likely the whole season will.  As for splitting seasons and giving you content which has been sold separately SciFi Channel screwed all of us with Battlestar Galactica.  Not only did they split 2 seasons but they made Razor and then included it in season 2 or 3.  The Simpsons, ah, I love them, I HATE Fox.  During the beginning of the release cycle they released one season every six months.  Then it went to once a year and now we are back to every six month, but skipping seasons. 
It is very sticky when buying seasons.  It took six years to get all of the M*A*S*H series just to have a pretty nice box set come out.  I bought TV series incomplete in the beginning when I was working at a great job and making a lot of money.  Now that the times have changed I mostly wait until all the seasons are available and someone is having sale.  This is sticky to though because first released seasons often get shelfed and then you have to scramble to find them as well.

There wouldn't be a lot of point to that. Wjile you could put 20+ hours of SD on a Blu-ray, you would end up with something that looks no better than a DVD and has a much smaller potential market.

If I like a series I buy them as they come out and as soon as I get them I drop everything and watch them, example MI-5 (Spooks).

A number of classic like I Love Lucy, I Spy, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., I buy as they come on sale.

If a series that I've never followed and is complete set and is on sale and it sounds interesting I'll buy it.
Example Arrested Development, the whole series less than $30.00.

I hate commercials and like the continuity of watching a complete season at once.

I've started a tag for complete TV series and for the initial season.

Blu-ray tried Rome (complete series) and Lost (1 thru 5) Amazon specials, they are great with plenty of extras.

I have notice that some older series come on DVD after they have a run on say retro TV on some of the lesser TV stations.

They are starting to sell for down load individual episodes for a number of series.

I can understand the problem with lack of retail sales (which then get returned), but once you manufacture a DVD (the coding part particularly), I don't see the point in not selling through Amazon.
As for "manufactured on demand" DVDs, they dropped from visibility as well after just a few (Nickelodeon) examples on Amazon.
