How do you think things would have worked out if HD DVD had surived? |

As for Frost/Nixon...it's not that I thought the picture wouldn't be an improvement it's that I didn't think the film itself warranted a blu-ray purchase. I tend to buy FX/Scenery/Costume/Epic films on BD. Having said that, if I could have got Frost/Nixon on BD for the £4 I paid for the dvd then I would, obviously, have gone that way. |

I think I'll only bother with a bluray player when my existing player dies, and even then, buying DVDs cheap in the local supermarket £3 a time, loads of good titles, is far more appealing than paying £15 for a Bluray release, especially on older movies where the original print doesn't have the resolution to justify a Bluray release. This makes me laugh. Original prints are made on film, which has a far greater resolution than any Blu-ray. The only problems they do have are dirt or marks on the print which can be cleaned up with restoration. If you have a large HDTV, you'll appreciate the difference HD can make. Just compare any HD movie to it's SD release. |

Sorry what I meant was the combination of original prints not being cleaned up, or more likely the use of a lower resolution existing transfer. I worked as a DVD Reviewer in the early days of DVD and the amount of straight lifts with little cleaning from VHS really annoyed me and my point was really that I didn't want to upgrade to Bluray for the sake of it and just get the DVD transfer upscaled to bluray. |

Unfortunately I can't help with your financial situation though! That sites a bit expensive IMO. I use http://www.blurayregioncodes.com/index.php?region=b to check regions (although I already knew which studios were R-free). Once my finances improve (anyone want to give me a job? ) I will be importing certain things (Monster Squad on BD for instance....which still has yet to arrive in the UK on dvd!! I've got the US dvd). I even have a region hack for my BD Player; but I just don't want to get into importing when prices do seem to come down quickly in the uk anyway. |
