DVD packaging only makes sense from a point of view of paranoid retailers. They hated CD packaging because it could easily fit into thieves' pockets, so they developed that stupid cardboard sleeve to put in the jewel case. We hated jewel boxes because they broke easily, and the album cover art was 1/4th the size of LP art. So the DVD package was delberately designed to be larger than a shirt pocket, even though the disc was identical in size. Shaped somewhat like a theatrical one-sheet poster... whomever approved the design never had to store a few thousand of them in a middle class home.

But the various electronic/magnetic anti-theft devices added to the extra tape to tell you of the anti-theft devices made opening/owning them horrible. The biggest problem I have with the upper label tape is when it gets old, it does not peel well. I like how (similar to the same stip on CDs) it makes it easy to read the title in retail bins.

I think the "peel here" and arrow label is as silly as the warning labels on car windshield covers which instruct us to remove before driving.
