If there is a Closed Caption track coded in the disk you should find a logo like this on the cover:

Ok my bad... wrong link

But mediaaccess do give information on captioning and information on the logos used to describe such dvd's and various other information.

Ok, the problem is that Media Access confuses closed captioning with subtitles (notice I use lower case, as we are not talking about the same thing as in the US).

Your first link points to the broadcast captioning with is generated using Teletext technology. This is not the same technology as Closed Captioning.

You second link points to what Media Access calls closed captioning on DVDs, but the rest of the world (including Australia except for Media Access) calls subtitles. Specifically, the hearing impaired subtitles which have things like sound effect descriptions, etc. These are subtitles, not Closed Captions. Thank you Media Access for muddying the waters and using your own terminology. Note how they suggest you find them - by looking for the subtitle track called "English - HI".

Edit: Also note that if you use the method Media Access recommends for finding "closed caption" dvds on EzyDVD, you end up with a long list of BluRay discs with "English -HI" subtitles. Clearly, Media Access is not talking about Closed Captions here.

It’s an unusual disc, as it’s also NTSC (not PAL) and coded to Regions 1,2 and 4 as well; not a common combination of things.

Yep. There have been a very few similar releases in Australia. They are just the US release in new packaging. You can identify them in Australia as they have a small red swatch on the front saying "NTSC", and the back cover usually says that you need a TV that is multi-standard.

though I am curious as to why johnd seems to think differently.

Closed Captioning (note the capitalisation) is a US only feature. Other locations have things they call "closed captions", but they all use other technology, such as subtitle tracks. None use the Closed Caption technology.

So, the real issue is:

Is this field in DVDProfiler there to show that Closed Captions (the technology) is used, or is it there to show that the disc has some form of captioning/subtitling aimed specifically at the hearing impaired?

From the Contribution Rules:

Closed Captioned identified by the logos:

If none of these logos is present, and you are unable to verify directly that the disc is Closed Captioned, then Closed Caption should not be checked.  Note: Subtitles are not the same as Closed Captioning.

As the contribution system apparently automatically removes CC for non US titles then it's clearly the former. I'd suggest the real issue is whether or not Ken should add an option for hearing impaired subtitles outside of the US locality?

Ok, now i understand better thanks to johnd.

So I just have one more question. A lot of dvd's have that CC logo on the back cover. Now I have never checked to see if and what type of supposed closed captions this logo implies on Australian dvd's. But if they are not the same as the ones in the USA, why are they using the logo and what does it mean?

From the rules it would mean you could contribute it as closed captioned because it has the logo.. but if it isn't really "Closed Captions"...

sheesh....

If the disc used in the Australian release is the same as in the matching US release (verifiable by comparing the two Disc IDs), then it should be Closed Captioned (visible only on US TV's) - but you won't be able to contribute it in view of Lithurge's remark.

Not necessarily true. While the disc contents may be identical to the US release, the disc ID may be (and probably is) different, given it's a different release for marketing purposes. For instance, the disc printing is different as it needs to carry the Australian rating.

This raises an ongoing question I have with DVDProfiler - why does it exist?

Is it just to catalogue discs? In which case it just blindly collects information, and Closed Caption refers to the technology solution implemented in the US.

Or is it a tool to manage your collection? In which case, you would want it to tell you that a particular disc has a text track of some form aimed at hearing impaired viewers, regardless of the technology used.

A more direct example may be seen in collecting region information. I have a lot of DVDs from various regions (probably a pre-requisite for having this program) and I use the region code fields when friends ask to borrow a disc. I can make sure that they can actually play it on their player.

Do Australian DVDs actually have this logo? I just did a quick look at a random dozen region 4 releases and none of them have the logo, but all of them bar one have the words "English for the hearing impaired" as a subtitle track.

Can you give an example of a region 4 release with the logo on it?

Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengance (recent release) UPC: 9325336159804 Has the CC logo and also states English for the hearing impaired (I uploaded this profile from the dvd)
Noticing someone said they saw closed captions using Media Player I even tried looking for them on my computer. No luck, as a matter of fact the only thing I can find is normal subtitles in English.

Wrath of the Titans UPC: 9325336135532 Exact same story as the one above - both of these are Warner Brothers releases - I think they are screwing with us with this CC thing.

Here's one that's a Disney release
John Carter UPC: 9398521777039
This one I haven't checked on my computer as yet to see if they actually exist.

The DVD I'm referring to also says NTSC on the rear cover with UK directly under it; althought what use the latter is I have no idea.

The rear sleeve in this case also carries the Closed Captions logo and some associated writing.
Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it?  Guttermouth "Lemon Water".  Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally.  So I'm an anarchist, deal with it.  Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted...

I meant it the other way around: if the disc IDs ARE the same, then...

BTW different disc printing does not necessarily imply a different Disc ID.

I wrote an email to Warner Bros Australia asking them about the CC logo on those dvd's. Now I am wondering if I should take bets on what their reply will be.

My money would be on "no answer - no reply received"

Never implied it did.
