As I said... a no vote to the change would be against the rules... because the rule that is trying to be used says...

Quote:
Make sure your contributions add significant value to the database. For example, contributions that only re-order the information within a certain section should not be submitted. These unnecessary changes are highlighted in the rules. Please do not make a separate contribution for them; however, they may be acceptable if you are making wider corrections to a profile

But because of the sentence I put in bold this rule can't be used since there is nothing in the rules about it being an unnecessary change.

So yes... it can be fixed. And anyone voting no because of the above rule would be voting wrong.

Sorry, wasn't direct at you, or any particular person to be honest.  Just thinking out loud.

Didn't take it as directed at me... or anything negative. I just wanted to be sure it was seen... as that rule comes up all the time... and people seem to always ignore that line when they bring it up.

Good to bring attention to it, as it might be easy to miss.

Mediadogg, I disagree that 2.4:1 is just a number. It's a measure of the aspect ration. Therefore the added zero makes a difference. So, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

However, I will also agree that the difference is probably not relevant to the question at hand. But perhaps it is relevant to some that the exact info on the back cover is "2.4:1" and not "2.40:1"? I don't know if anyone cares, but seeing how some users demand the overview to be copied exactly to the most minute detail, I suspect that there may be some that care about this info as well?

So the question is if data conformity is more important than preserving the data as presented? Does data conformity actually add any usefulness?

@GSyren, I'm actually really with you.

I just thought I would have a little fun with something that makes absolutely no difference (in this case, anyway.)

Edit: Well DJ raises maybe the best point of all, in the next post.

Yes it does. If you run a statistic over the aspect ratio of your movies, you'll get 1.33:1, 1.85:1, 2.35:1

And then you have the odd couples like 1.77:1 and 1.78:1 and 2.4:1 and 2.40:1 which mud up your statistics.

@mediadogg, Pulling my leg, are you? Why you dirty little...

@DJ Doena, But there is no such functionality in DVD Profiler, afaik, so it would have to be in some external program. And anyone collection statistical information should be smart enough to realize that such info should be treated as numbers, so it really shouldn't make any difference...

(And now I guess I p*ssed off a number of addin developers...  )

I doubt that the aspect ratio has been "measured", it's just something the media companies stamp on their covers. For some reason Warner and perhaps some others seem to prefer 2.4:1 over 2.40:1. Maybe they couldn't decide if they wanted 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 as their general rule. (I believe the exact ratio is usually 2.39:1 on modern films.) But the cover is not really important anyway since this information should come from the disc whenever possible. Then you could say that it has really been "measured" with some kind of precision.

From Wikipedia:

2.35:1: 35 mm anamorphic prior to 1970, used by CinemaScope ("'Scope") and early Panavision. The anamorphic standard has subtly changed so that modern anamorphic productions are actually 2.39,[1] but often referred to as 2.35 anyway, due to old convention. (Note that anamorphic refers to the compression of the image on film to maximize an area slightly taller than standard 4-perf Academy aperture, but presents the widest of aspect ratios.) All Indian Bollywood films released after 1972 are shot in this standard for theatrical exhibition.

2.39:1 (~12:5): 35 mm anamorphic from 1970 onwards. Aspect ratio of current anamorphic (wide-screen) theatrical viewings. Often commercially branded as Panavision format or 'Scope. Specified as 2.40:1 for Blu-ray Disc film releases (1920×800 resolution).

Sorry off topic, but it's nice to see somebody else makes the same typo I do when trying to type ratio.

When I audit a DVD, I usually measure it with JR Screen Ruler. I wish we would use the exact ratios and not the closest match. I also use 2.4:1 when the cover says so if it measures that and lock it locally. Sometimes the cover says 2.4 or 2.40 and it's 2.35.

And don't even get me started about the hundreds of discs that say 1.85 and in fact were cropped to 1.78.

You can enter any ratio. You don't have to use the predefines values.

I know I can, but then I wouldn't be able to contribute them.

I wasn't sure about that since I thought I remembered people doing it before (Measuring and putting in exact)... but looking at the rules... the only place aspect ratio is mentioned in any of the rules says...

Quote:
Use the Ratio drop down list to enter the aspect ratio of the main feature. In cases where Widescreen and P&S versions are included, list the Widescreen ratio.

So per Rules... it is true. You must use the drop down list. I will have to remember that.
