It doesn't matter... the original release of any TV series is on TV not on any form of home video.

Why? Because you decided?

The producers decided to produce a show. They released it on Video first - for what reason ever. Why should the release date be a later one??

The produced date for any program aired on TV is the date it aired. The original title for any TV series released to DVD, Blu-Ray, etc. is the title of the series. The problem is how to distinguish between the individual seasons.
With the current program it is impossible to do it by using the correct original title because there is a season descriptor that is added or The X Files (original title) 9 seasons will show as 1 in the database. Now if everyone could agree to put in the original title field - The X Files: Season 1 , The X Files: Season 2 then we wouldn't need Ken to solve a common sense issue. But knowing how people here are, there will be no compromise.

Further muddling the issue is that the title on the main screen (the one that has Episodes, Set Up, Search, Extras on it) on each X-Files Blu disc is a different title of the season. Cover: Season 1. Disc: Season One
My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT.
FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that.
Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it!

wouldn't you use that as the disc title, but still have just The X Files: Season 1 in the original title field.

Even with a common type of season indicator in the original title field for all localities, you still have an issue with seasons that run from 1 year to the next in the produced year field. Since a Television series is a whole it should be the earliest date on all disc profiles, even when they extend into a new year. Like The Big Bang Theory 2007 for the first 2 disc but the third is 2008.

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete First Season (The Big Bang Theory: Season 1) (2007)
The Big Bang Theory: The Complete First Season: Disc 1 (The Big Bang Theory: Season 1) (2007)
The Big Bang Theory: The Complete First Season: Disc 2 (The Big Bang Theory: Season 1) (2007)
The Big Bang Theory: The Complete First Season: Disc 3 (The Big Bang Theory: Season 1) (2007)

still have the disc level titles, all 4 profiles are linked as 1 title.  Just a thought

That's the main reason why I extremely dislike disc-level profiles for TV shows. EXTREMELY dislike.  I don't contribute disc-level profiles and wish they were banned.

That's not the problem.

The title/original title question can only be solved with a rule change, not with any discussion or interpretion.

If we are willing to tidy this up, we'll need a rule set ho to set the original title and the sort title of TV show box sets - the disc level profile solution would be a benefit...

Are we willing?

Not "we" but Ken. Is Ken willing to tackle this problem, preferably without screwing up the OriginalTitle to support the IMHO dead-end which is CLT?

Well, one thing is certain. The different use of (Original) Titles for TV seasons does screw up the CLT results even more than is the case for movies. If Ken were to implement some standard for original titles of TV seasons (preferably across languages as well), this would significantly improve the (admittedly limited) value of the CLT.

I don't see any technical solution to this issues. How could it look like?

As far as I can see it's an issue of the rule set, which we are liable for...

The "standard" I was referring to earlier would indeed primarily be a rule change, possibly supported by some sort of auto-filter.

If we are willing to alter the rules, this should be easy.

We have a complete page for TV series. There we'd have to add a section for Original Tiltle and write something like:
Quote:
Enter the original title even if the show is released in the same language than produced. Do not include the season indicators from the title field, but append a colon followed by S and two digits for the season number instead  (eg. Angel: S01). Do not include or add season titles or tag lines.

Another Section would take care of the Sort Title:
Quote:
Use the Original Title as Sort Title, too.

Additional we'd need an addition to the Disc-level Profiles section:
Quote:
Use the Original Title from the season profile (box set parent) without any modification.
Append the letter D and two digits for the disc number to the sort title of the season profile (box set parent) and use this as sort title for the disc-level profile (eg. Angel: S01D02).

This is only a first shot and I'm not native speaking English. Feel free to shoot it down

Wow, I really underestimated my threadk illing capabilities...

Addition: The sort title has to be built up from the local language title instead of the original title; a little flaw in my first thought.

But doesn't seem to be important any more...

I would be in favor of this. Disc-level profiles should have the year of the air date of the first episode.

Are you saying to put the year in the original title field? If so I am against putting non-title stuff in the original title field. But I am thinking you don't mean to put the year in the field as I don't see any reason it would be helpful.

As for the rest the subject at hand...

I am still totally against using the DVD release packaging as the original title...since I still strongly feel the original release is being released on TV.

I am against putting something like...

Title: The Big Bang Theory: The Complete First Season
Original Title: The Big Bang Theory

as that breaks things for those that use Original Title for their title in the list. As all seasons will show up as just "The Big Bang Theory."

As for standardizing the season indicators in the original title field like...

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete First Season (The Big Bang Theory: Season 1)
The Big Bang Theory: The Complete First Season: Disc 1 (The Big Bang Theory: Season 1)
The Big Bang Theory: The Complete First Season: Disc 2 (The Big Bang Theory: Season 1)
The Big Bang Theory: The Complete First Season: Disc 3 (The Big Bang Theory: Season 1)

While I am not thrilled with standardizing things... never have been. If we can work it all out and get Ken to agree to it (a must)...it seems to be the lesser of the problems. BUT we still need the disc numbers in the original title field or it still breaks things for those using original title for their title listing. As they would have 4 listings for the same exact title. Which we do have to take into consideration. We can not break a function that works now to fix a different function.

I am not sure why Sort title has been mentioned in this thread since sort title is a local only field. It is not one that can be updated.
Pete
