Oh damn, I just realized that LibraryThing only takes up to 200 books with the free edition :-\

Also it only has relatively new books, English/US only, and books that pre-date the use of ISBN (I have about 4000 of those...) need to be done by hand.

I've been using DVD Profiler for my books and comics as well. I scan the covers, put the author(s) into the crew section, use default and custome genres; I put the language in the subtitle section and maintain the "media type" (hard cover, paperback, issue, ...) and the "content type" (novel, non-fiction, ...) into tags

It's not ideal but it suits my needs well enough without having to use another program.

One day I'll have to get my old books (pre 2000) out of storage and profile them, too. Unfortunately my storage unit is 500 miles away and is called "my parents' basement".

I sense a trend here...

FORUM QUESTION:

What did you profile before there were DVD's?

Personally I would love a Book/CD/Game Profiler. But, I don't think that's ever going to happen.

So, I've tried literally dozens of different progams (including all the ones other people have mentioned here), until I finally came across Numento.

For me it's the absolute best thing after Profiler because all fields/layout are totally custimisable and it's got a great search function and some very nice display options.

It can be found here: http://www.numento.com/crbst_29_en.html

Profile? Nothing. DVDs and DVD Profiler changed the world.

OK I can see what will be added into "Wishlist",
but what criteria will there be for "Owned" ... and is "Ordered" then limited to the professionals?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I'd like a Book Profiler too.  That way I can use it to profile my spitball collection and know exactly what books and pages my spitballs came from.  I guess spitballs would be child profiles?

Yes it would be.  However if the book was a collection of works it could be a grandchild profiles since each work would have to be profiled as the children.

We need to ensure the proper hierarchy of spit balls is maintained

I love my DVD Profiler.  In the early days I used the search engine often and it saved me a great deal of money on purchases.  I still use the program and love it.

I would LOVE to have a Book Profiler.  I buy first edition (sometimes signed) copies of books.  I also have books which I just love and would want protected.  If there was a Profiler that allowed scans or photos of the book and/or inserts attesting to the condition when purchased plus other pertinent information about the book:  place of purchase, date of purchase, original price and price at the time of purchase etc. I would be able to print that booklet out (provided it also had a Report function) and then just hand that report to my insurance agent for my homeowners insurance.  It would make my life much easier for that purpose alone.  I would also want it to be able to keep track (as in books loaned to people) of my other copies which I use for reading or loaning to friends.

I believe that a program is needed.  Much research would have to go into planning it because identifying books can sometimes be complicated depending on country of publication as well as how each publisher chooses to document it's printing order.

Here is to hope,

All you have in your Wishlist for Book-Profiler is possible already with DVDProfiler as it is today.

All you'd need to do is make use of:
1) Custom Collection Categories
2) Custom Media Types
3) Tags
