They should be glad dvdprofiler doesn't have the restrictions of All My Movies™ :-

You cannot create your own movie catalog but you can do what you want with the sample database. Please note that the sample database will be rewritten each time you reinstall All My Movies™

So, you can't really get to use it unless you pay for it.

I downloaded it yesterday, out of curiosity, and tried it out. Man it is a mess! Be glad you have DVD Profiler!

This poll was the first time I'd heard of any of those other programs, and I checked out Movie Collector at collectorz.com and noticed that it has built-in IMDb support. I'm curious to know if they're paying for legal access to the IMDb database, or if they just haven't been caught yet. Does anyone know?

I have a licensed copy of Collectorz.com, used prior to DVDP.  There program pulls data from IMBD so I image they have to have a pay for legal access to be able to pull data from their database.

It's entirely possible. From the IMDB faq.

Quote:

Content Licensing at IMDb

IMDb content licensing FAQ:

Q: Do you license the entire IMDb?
A: We will not license the entire database, though hundreds of thousands of titles is over-kill for most uses.

Q: How will the data be transferred?
A:While we are flexible, we supply the majority of our partners with XML data files, retrievable at an ftp site.

Not necessarily. A few years ago lmoelleb developed a program called DVD Profiler Cast for use with DVDP, which did  exactly the same thing. You'd edit the profile and launch DVD Profiler Cast and it would automatically grab data from IMDb and populate the DVDP profile with info for you. I sincerely doubt lmoelleb paid a licensing fee to IMDb for this.

My point is that doing so is possible without paying licensing fees to IMDb. This doesn't mean collectorz.com doesn't, just that they could. And I was just curious which it was.

It's possible and it is called scraping and IMDb has this to say about it

No in fact Collectorz have partnership with the differents sites they use for their differents softwares (Book, Music, ...) and they use a special stream to extract information. I don't know for IMDb but for Amazon they use XML files offers by Amazon to extract data.

Ross wasn't saying that Collectorz was scraping, he was pointing out that the program Astrakan referred to (created for a certain other well know program) was doing that.

If you look at my post above you'll see I've already confirmed IMDB do license data, using an XML format, not surprising as they are owned by Amazon.

Woohoo! 49.4% and 191 votes. Come on, Profiler is almost halfway!

Someone post a sticky thread telling newbies that if they vote, they'll get a link to download a trial of CD Profiler ...

Like Rossroy, I downloaded the program, took a look-see and found out what I allready knew. DVDP is still the best software of it's kind bar none.
