Ouch! I'm sorry about the accident, I hope you have a fast recovery.

My question - where's YOUR list?!

Well, I've never been much into TV series. There's something about the format that I dislike, which is the cliffhanger. The only two series I have in my collection are Amazing Stories and Tales From the Crypt, both cheesy but fun in their own way.

I usually avoid watching series because, as a writer, the temptation to take something from here and there is too high! (But we don't say that in the business, we say it pollutes our creative cells ) I rather write them than watch them.

However, I'd say that the only one which I've been completely hooked on has been Twin Peaks. So that would be my recommendation. I also liked a few episodes from Dead Like Me, but that is mainly because I thought the concept was wonderful.
Funny, these cookies don't taste anything like Girl Scouts.

Battlestar Galactica (new)

When I heard they were replacing Dirk Benedict's character, Lieutenant Starbuck, with a woman, well, it completely turned me off to the new series. Starbuck pretty much defined Battlestar Galactica for me back in the late 70s.

I haven't seen any episodes of the new series so unless a fan of the original series can convince me that the remake is worth my time and money, I doubt I'll make the investment.
I was a great fan of the original and of Dirk Benedict/Starbuck/Face; but you cannot compare the old series with the new one. Except for the outline they are totally different and Starbuck rocks!

It's a really great story and the characters have much more depth than in the old series especially because nobody is perfect (In the old series everybody was practically flawless).

Around here you get the 3 hour mini series for 7 Euros and it's really worth a try.

Agreed with you regarding Starbuck. Even after watching the Miniseries I wasn't hooked. About half way through the 1st season I was about to stop watching.

Just couldn't get used to the fact that Starbuck was a woman. Also the Cylons looking like humans didn't win me over.

I then started looking at it as a completely different series and stopped comparing it to the original (since there is no comparison  )  As a show in it's own right it is a really good show. Not one I have to see as soon as it's aired (record everything I watch) but usually I'll watch it within 24 hours.

IMO - If you watch it forgetting everything you remember about the old series you will like it. It's certainly worth the price of the DVDs. Or wait another year and get the what will soon to be coming "complete series" box set.

Are you sure it is cancelled Rick? I have been hearing rumours and contradictory stories, but nothing concrete as yet! I hope not.

How long have you got???

I just bought a friends collection of 500+ DVDs - mostly box sets and TV series. I'm not quite sure where I want to start. I'm off from work for a few months so I have a lot of time for movies!

So are any of the ones we listed in that collection? If Buffy is there, that's where you need to start. Ignore what everyone else tells you is apparently "the best"; Buffy is it.   Especially season two. Television was invented for Buffy Season Two. When John Logie Baird switched on the first TV, he was secretly hoping to see a short blonde girl kicking the heck out of vampires. Maybe that's just a bloke thing ...

I rather enjoyed the original series and I still have fond memories of running to the TV whenever I heard the theme song start playing.

Likewise, I didn't like the idea of casting Starbuck as a female but the new Starbuck won me over in staying pretty much true to the original Starbuck (except hits on men now).

Watch the mini-series and let that decide for you.  If you don't like it, you only lost 120 minutes out of your life.

Last official word I heard from the producers was that this next season is going to be the last season but it'll be a full season (not this 10-11 episode crap).  They are also making a TV movie about what happened to the Pegasus after the initial Cylon attack which will air prior to the new season.

They said they wanted to end the series the way THEY wanted to end it, not keep going until Sci-Fi rips the rug out from under them.

Concerning Dark Angel - pretty good series.  Sucks they canceled it.

I just finished alphabetizing the recommendations – thank you everyone! I’m also sorting and organizing the DVDs today. Once I get that done, I’ll post them. I’m really excited because there are soooo many on everyone’s favorite list.  I really will have a hard time deciding where to start!
(Already own and have watched all of the Buffy seasons - I like seeing women kick butt too! )
