Some suggestions I found quite useful in my editor:

- Using tab will jump to the cells in the following order (can be enabled/disabled):
FirstName, LastName, Role, FirstName of next line
As these are the fields mostly needed. If the others are needed, the user can also use the cursor keys
- "Enter" will go to the FirstName field of the next line
- Possibility to reorder columns (mainly to get the role field before the name fields, as this is the order most end credits are build up)
- Possibility to switch appending of cast and crew off (i.e. auto-clear on paste)

That's probably a question of design "philosophy", but I'm reluctant to impose my own inventions on a well-established UI. The key to usability is consistency. If I work with an Excel-based program, I expect it to behave exactly as Excel normally does. This is important for both the experienced and the novice user. What the former one already knows and expects, the latter one may have yet to discover, but in doing so, he gains general skills, not knowledge limited to a specific task.

For example, in Excel, the ENTER key behavior depends on whether you use TAB or ARROW keys to move between cells on the same row. After entering a sequence like "data1 TAB data2 TAB data3 ENTER" the selection will go to the data1 column of the next row. But if you enter "data1 RIGHT-ARROW data2 RIGHT-ARROW data3 ENTER", the selection, while still moving to the next row, remains in the data3 column. Therefore, imposing a new behavior on the handling of TAB and ARROW keys is a bad idea, because it breaks consistency with the Excel UI.

As for reordering columns, you can drag them around and arrange them in any order you want. A command for quickly switching the position of the Role column is already available on the More... popup menu.

Nevertheless, thanks for your suggestions (and to tweeter as well), please continue to make them, despite my rejection of these particular ones.
Matthias

Default shortcut keys for the operations described above:

Shift+Space  - Select entire row(s)

Ctrl+Hyphen  - Delete cell(s)
Ctrl+Plus      - Insert cell(s)

Ctrl+X, goto target place, Ctrl+Plus  - Move cell(s)

See Excel Help for more.

Compared to 98% of those i work with i'm the Excel wizard.  Here i'm only an apprentice.

Can't believe i didn't know about the Ctrl-Hyphen/Plus and the Shift+Space.

Thanks.
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

I must have been blind: I had overlooked this option in the More... menu
