I missed this post until I saw you had quoted yourself.

So you actually believe that Madonna wanting to make a ill conceived movie is a communist plot to subvert Americans in Iraq?

What are you smoking? Drugs are dangerous and you really shouldn't be taking them.

Perhaps to you, gunnar, but I find it a perfectly acceptable reference to Madonna, I might not put it the way lord did but still. I think the woman is a tad off center.

Why? Just because she wants to be in a movie? Or because you don't like her music?

I don't understand why you would categorise someone like this???

I don't think it will. Bad remakes have a tendency to simply be forgotten. I mean, when most people think of movies like Notorious, The 39 Steps, or It's a Wonderful Life, I don't think they automatically also think of their forgettable remakes. If the Madonna remake of Casablanca is as uninspired as many suspect it will be, it will quickly be relegated to a footnote in the annals of movie history.

Simple, Paul, I don't think she is as talented as SHE thinks she is. She is a decent singer (won't call her great), she has left her mark on music. But as the saying goes she should not quit her day job.

Actually there are only a few remakes that come out fairly decent.

That depends entirely on your definition of "a few"... here's a number of remakes that were pretty good:

- The Wizard of Oz
- The Maltese Falcon
- Ben-Hur
- His Girl Friday
- The Man Who Knew Too Much
- An Affair to Remember

Those are some older movies we today consider classics, but which were actually remakes. Then there's some more contemporary stuff too which I think we can agree were worthwhile efforts:

- Scarface
- The Departed
- Cape Fear
- 3:10 to Yuma
- Fatal Attraction
- The Fly
- Twelve Monkeys

Lots of titles could be added to these lists without trying too hard.

Now, granted, for every worthwhile remake I drag up it wouldn't be too hard to list several not so worthwhile ones.

I'll also happily concede that the predecessors most worhwhile remakes are made from leave some to be desired, and hence there's the room for improvement which allowed the remakes to overshadow the originals and become classics.

But the point is that if studios and filmmakers were to have a staunch "no remake" policy, we wouldn't have old classics like The Wizard of Oz and Ben-Hur, or contemporary high quality movies like Scarface and Twelve Monkeys.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but it's a pet peeve of mine when people automatically react with disdain whenever a remake is announced.

KM

Um, not to be rude but I have no problems with remakes and wish that you wouldn't lump me into that category.  My problem is with Madonna.  She cannot act, never has been able to and in my opinion never will.  Also to my understanding she is going to make it take place during the Iraqi Conflict with the United States.  Guess who will get the part of the Nazi's due to Madonna's political views.  That is the correct the U.S. Military.  An institution that I happen to favor and support.  That is why I have disdain for this remake.

And I do agree with you, there have been some really great remakes which I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Number one sir I do not use drugs and take extreme exception to you suggesting it, even if you are just making an ill conceived attempt at humor.  Number two Madonna has made her political views very clear, including her protest against the war in Iraq.  Number three I never called her a Communist, get your facts straight.

I'll agree with that, Lord. I wish Hollywood read a letter written by Sam Goldwyn in 1961.

In that letter Mr. Goldwyn said the following:
""Today we are at a very crucial period in history. Even if the cold war never develops into a hot one, our country still has its hands full all over the world. The pictures we send abroad have an effect in every corner of the globe.

"We should never lose sight of the fact that, no matter how entertaining a picture may be or how much money it may make, it can do our country a great deal of harm if it plays into the hands of our enemies ... we have a great responsibility in this regard--far greater than almost any other segment of our country--and we must guide ourselves accordingly."

See the current spate of box-office FAILURES if youneed any more information, Redacted, lions for Lambs et al. ALL of them have been anti-Amerivcan and anti-war and ALL of them have box-office FAILURES.

It seems that this is another example of language confusion. To describe someone as "off centre" would imply some mental illness in the Uk. I apologise since I seem to have misunderstood what you meant.

And they say Americans have no sense of humour.. I'm so glad they are wrong.

In the UK, when people are asked if they have ever smoked grass they answer honestly (and sometimes the answer is yes). Funnily enough they don't take extreme exception to it..

What does her political views have to do with her wanting to be in a remake of Casablanca? I'm finding it very difficult to follow your reasoning.

See your quote I have highlighted above - You said Madonna was a member of the left - if you are excluding communist what alternative left wing group are you saying she is a member of?

Siskel & Ebert wished that remakes could be made of average or mediocre films instead of classics.  There are so many movies that could be improved by that next rewrite or rethinking.

There are a multitude of films of this ilk she could try that would provide better opportunities for her.

OK, that one is probably the exception to the rule.  Surely even Madonna could make a better version.  Better...not good.

And if it is so: then what's the point of even making it? That's basically my point. I don't see any reasons for even making a new version, unless someone comes up with something totally new. And I doubt Madonna is the person to come up with such an idea. Sorry, but I don't believe in her.
