Once I finish my full audit of owned DVD's, I plan on visiting the Trading Forum for DVD's that now have an HD counterpart.

In  february "Amadeus" is supposed to be out on BD. "Will you sell your DVD-version", you ask?
At least not all three of them
( Original v. R2, Directors Cut R1, Directors Cut R2)

And, yes, I'm still buying the BD...

Rant:
Question is:  What are you going to do with your HiDef 1080 DVD's when the 'industry' introduces yet another new format in the next decade? ( 1580I- 1770i ? (sic) )
Add them to your ( huge) box of CED's/Laser Disc/ Beta/VHS/DVD's ??  ?

The studios love us for keeping up with the Jones's and the vast majority of their now and future  income for older titles is this constant turn over of formats. I mean just how much visually better can Casablanca get in B/W on your 50" Plasma in 1080i .. ???
I'm just content these days to enjoy my second or even third release, on std DVD that have been upgraded to i.e. anamorphic widescreen with Directors Ed. and all the 2 disc video extras ,that I turned over each time the edition was upgraded in just the 480/500i  DVD issue only.

The up converted signals to 1080i on my Toshiba HD player is good enough for me. But for those of you who are NOT affected at all by the current global recession, and have money to burn for your hobby., Hollywood Loves ya Baby ..
Back to topic:
I'd say give them away as free gifts to friends and relatives who have no library of titles to speak of.
Or you could make many many  shiny Xmas trees of those little silver platters, and of course mobiles are still big aren't they?

Well, I'm stingy.  I'm not giving away any of what I currently own, and I have no plans to buy a BD player anytime soon.  My current player upconverts to 1080i, which is the best my HDTV can play.

HD still has a long way to go before it comes anywhere close to market saturation, so I see no need to spend all that money on upgrades until they start actually phasing out the standard DVD format.

John, I felt the same way and was very skeptical regarding the format until I saw Blu-Ray on my Brother's 1080p 46" Plasma. I was literally blown away by the clarity and color depth of the picture compared to SD DVD and 1080i. I was hooked from that moment on. I've had my Panasonic 42" 1080p Plasma for about three weeks now and I'm still giddy when I watch a film in HD Blu-Ray . Both picture and sound are phenominal. Granted, it cost a good penny to upgrade: Total of just over $1,200.00 but I don't regret it for one minute.

I haven't gone Blu-Ray yet, but if I did, I don't see why I'd be in a hurry to get rid of the non-HD DVDs. Blu-Ray still requires special, costly players. If I got a Blu-Ray player it would presumably replace the DVD player connected to my television, but I still have a standalone DVD player and just acquired a boombox with a tiny screen for DVDs, and I won't be able to play Blu-Ray on these, nor would it be worth much to get Blu-Ray capability on small screens.

There's also the two PCs in the household which at least so far don't have Blu-Ray compatible drives but will play regular DVDs. I might upgrade the desktop drive, but certainly not the laptop's.

I've seen this question posted before on different sites and what I've read makes this pretty unlikely.  The visual difference between 1080i/p and higher formats isn't nowhere as visible as the difference between DVD (480) and 1080 due to our visual acuity.

Well, as long as I'm getting better quality I'm not complaining. It's not like I'm going to replace all my old DVDs, I doubt it would be possible anyway. My HD DVD and Blu-ray players play DVDs just fine and offers a nice upconverted picture for those old or rare releases. No need to throw the baby out with the water.

Now: I have a confession to make.... I only own 1 Blu-Ray  , to say that 'I am not a fan of the format' would be a lie, it's just that I don't see the point in going True Blu at the moment 'cos:

1. I still buy a lot of DVD's
2. DVD's are generally cheaper than Blu's
3. Most of the movies I like are not released (and in some cases probably will never be released) on Blu
4. Most of the Blu's that are released I already own on DVD, or are Vanilla Editions that are not interesting to me as a collector (give me Steelbooks, oversize Clamshells, Digipaks and Limited Edition numbered releases any day  )

My only Blu is the Limited Edition UK release of Reservoir Dogs in the Petrol Can packaging:

The funny thing is that it was also released on DVD on the same day, plus the fact that I already own the 2 Disc Special Edition on DVD. I think it was a combination of it being a film favourite of mine and the wicked packaging that sold me... it was also only £3 more than the DVD edition, which made me take the plunge into the Blu depths (hey, they should release 'Deep Blue Sea' as 'Deep Blu Sea' on Blu-Ray... that would practically sell itself)...

...The other slightly embarassing thing for me when it comes to Blu-Ray, is that I own not one, but two devices that are capable of playing Blu-Ray's , a PS3 and a multimedia PC with Blu-Ray drive (which also upscales DVD's to 1080p  ).

I feel a lot better now that I've got that off my chest... long story short... I still have the Reservoir Dogs DVD and will be keeping it, hence I vote for 'keep' in the poll.

Since I don't own Bluray  I have a question for my BD owners:
When you are playing the Hi-Def disc,, and, anywhere in the midst of the movie playing-- you touch the stop key on your remote.. the movie has now stopped.,  when you hit play again.. does it start from where you left off?  or does it start up at the begining or the FBI warnings..???

My Toshiba A3 starts up again  at the first 'running frame' ( FBI)  and I find it it infurating,,, it now takes afew seconds to go past this and then get into the menu so I can now find the chapter section and figure out where I was., Pausing the film is the only to get back to the film running. I have been known to have the disc paused for 24 hours sometimes.
I was told this is how the Hidef players work..  It is not your conventional DVD player..like, when I'm using a regular player and regular DVD's I can stop the movie and turn off the deck., come back the next day and the player start up , It will start the movie playback from where I left off.  I'd like to know if this is a common problem.

That's the one thing that irks me about Blu-Ray. If you press Stop, it does not "remember", like DVD players do, where you left off. It has to reload the disc . My DVD player could "remember" up to 5 discs where I left off after pressing Stop....I sure miss that .
