I must say I find it deeply himorous when people statr talking how hated the US in the world...and yet alot of people all over the world are clamoring, begging, sneaking and even dying to come here...that would seem to represent a major disparity. I don't believe people a clamoring to to get into Russia, China or any other country.

Now, now Skip, be fare  compare apples with apples, can’t compare America to Russia or China, other countries like UK, France, Holland & South Africa are facing the same ‘clamouring’ to get into…

At the height our shameful xenophobia incidents at one border post 60 000+ where fleeing the country while some 24 000+ where ‘clamouring’ to get in…

I just wish that our so-called ‘brave\courageous’ leaders from all over the world just had some gumption, balls to take responsibility when things go wrong & not try to pass it on to others or deny it with double talk…

I think we are to blame for letting them get away with it because they wrap themselves in flags & buzz words like (depending where you are) freedom (US), revolution (Cuba) or Anti-Colonialism (Zim & other African States) and if that’s not bad enough they use family values, crime, god or whatever is popular and not really a problem to divert from real problems.

I’m sorry but if you or I have to screw up like Mugabe at our work place we would be fired & worst not being pampered by silent diplomacy or with carefully crafted (spin) words basically saying bad, bad lad…

Ok, rant over, I intended the reply to be light but it somehow got away from me as post went on…stop watching news or turn it down while posting…

Finally I notice Europeans, and I have visited Europe love to call American stupid.  We have invented more things than any of your countries in some cases most of Europe combined.  You call us stupid but are always willing to put your hands in OUR pockets for economic aid and the second when you are threatened, it is our children you put in harms way.  Maybe we are stupid for helping you, just so you can tell us how bad we are.  Instead of making posts criticizing us I'd prefer you just said, "Thank you." and then shut your mouth.

Oh, it's European-Bashing again.

Wanted to write some really selected words, but thought better of it.

I don't know where in Europe you have been, but at least in my region of Europe there aren't too many people who think little of US Americans.
I admit that there are people who do so, but they are not better than the US-American who thinks little of all Europeans because some of us don't really like Americans.

I'm really sorry for being interested in world politics, and as a side effect having an opinion on whom I would prefer as the president of the USA. If this in any way interferes with your interests I'm sorry about this too. BUT I will not, in no way and under no obligation shut my mouth (as you put it so eloquently) when I think that there are things that go wrong.
And it's definitely not you to tell me or any other European what I should think or say!
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

So then by your statement you don't like Americans.

Where did I say that?
I strongly differentiate between individuals and a group.
Since I don't know all Americans who am I to judge about the Americans, all I can do is speak about the Americans I know personally, and I mostly like them (but this is depending on their personality not on their homecountry, just like with all people I like or dislike).
What I don't like are some aspects of the US American foreign policy, if this for you means that I don't like Americans as such ... it's rather your fault than mine.

I think your personal problem here is that you tend to mix up individuals and groups. So when I speak of "us" as the group of Europeans and then add "some of" it doesn't necessarily include me as a person.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!

you don't think people clamour to get into countries like Canada or the UK then (amongst other countries)?

America strides the World as though they own it. And do you realise other countries are frightened of you (the country)?

The Roman empire used to have its 'pax Romana' - until it was overthrown and lost its world power.

Pauls:

If countries fear the US then i would say that is not necessarily a bad thing. There are countries that if they don't fear the US then they should. The UK would have no need of fear in this regard, we have been your staunchest ally since 1814 ot 15, and I don't envision that changing. Unlike many countries and what some have accused US of, that is being imperialistic, we are far from it. In the 20th century we unfortunately had to fight several wars, we have not retained any conquered land, we ask instead only enough land upon which to bury our dead. If you fear our nuclear capabilities, agian, no need, we have no desire to use them UNLESS we or one of our allies is attacked. But I do think that the enemies of US need to understand that we can and will kick their tail around or as numerous people have put it in the past...the BEST defense is a good offense. Twice in the last 100 years we got our collective nose bloodeid because we were complacent, but know that if you bloody our nose we will do far worse in return and God help anyone who wants to try and fight on our beaches.

To Everybody / anyone who cares:

It makes me laugh when people try to subjugate whole countries to neat little stereotypical boxes. I don't know how anyone could justify a statement like 'I hate all Americans ( / insert generic nationality/sexuality/religious group/skin colour here)' It's as pathetically ignorant as saying 'I hate food', stereotypes and grouping people is useless -  it is all down to an individual. There will be plenty of annoying Americans, as well as 'Europeans' 'Brits' 'Chinese' and if you want to get down to the grit of it 'women' 'children' 'dogs'.... you can't stamp a label on a collective group. It's like us with our DVD genres - you don't label all films from Europe the same way, so you don't do it to the people. There are no real divisional borders now we live in a truely multi-cultural world, with people of different nationalities, religious views, customs, and ideas living together. Yes, the American elections are extremely important because whether people like it or not the US is one of the most powerful nations in the world (politically anyway) and whatever happens in the US has a knock on effect within the rest of the world. But the World is a big place with it's stupid people scattered all over and not just concentrated in the US ( ) and at the end of the day it's the majority of sane people that have to club together to make sure we don't screw this planet up more than we already have. For that we will need America, England, Germany, Russia, China, Argentina..... etc. etc. .... even Burkina Faso. So stop bickering children, these kinds of arguements start wars and are wasted energy that could be applied to more constructive activities such as buying DVDs, watching DVDs, going to the cinema, and contributing updated DVD profiles    ........... but I suppose we do live in a democracy so it's our right to moan, fight and argue about these things...... damn my paradoxical political logic!

Far be it for me to correct Paul.  As for Goblin, you used the word US.  In the English language this is how we identify ourselves as part of a group.  You said, ...some of us don't really like Americans.  This identified you with the group that doesn't like Americans.  Sorry you said it not me.  As for me I have no personal problem I am simply stating facts as they are being pointed out to me.

No, that's taking Michael's statement out of context. Within the whole statement he is using "us" to define himself as a European, nothing more. There is nothing in Michael's post to suggest he includes himself in the "disliking Americans" group.

so.. what you are saying is that you won't apologise?

As North has said - its perfectly clear that he is saying he is part of Europe and that some parts of Europe don't like Americans.

If I knew a good maths book on sets available in the US I would point you towards it so you could read it.

I would be able to follow your argumentation, if I would have used the word "we", but as Paul and North already wrote and I tried to make clear in an earlier posting the "us" only referred to the group of Europeans and in my understanding of the English language the use of the words "some of" in combination with "us" explicitly excludes me (as a member of "us") from the smaller group of the "some of"'s.
This came out even of the context of my first posting, where I clearly referred to the group of America-Non-Likers as "they"

Quoting myself (Bolds added by me):
Quote:
I admit that there are people who do so, but they are not better than the US-American who thinks little of all Europeans because some of us don't really like Americans.

But I think we can stop this here, because, no matter what I (or any other) will write, you will be convinced that all Europeans think of all Americans as "Stupid", or arrogant or autocratic, or whatever prejudice there might be (Yes, I know them, but that doesn't mean I share them).
So for yourself, you decided to turn these prejudices around, but as bizarre_eye already wrote, there are annoying people everywhere, but the reverse conclusion that then all people are annoying is logically incorrect.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?
