It certainly does look like the idealogical differences will come down to court appointments in this election cycle.  That's about the only area where either candidate strays from center...despite the rhetorical bunk being tossed around by the two campaigns.

You actually believe that Berak Obama is in the center.

You need to do a little more research!

Try not to watch too much Faux news.  It's darn near impossible to get elected for national office in this country if you don't straddle the fence.  If you think any of our candidates are extreme then you haven't ventured outside the country.  Its all shades of gray here, in spite of the shrill voices we hear during silly season.

No, but making it easy to get them will not work either. The best way to fight crime is not to give a bad example. How can you teach someone not to kill if you kill yourself? Sure, guns don't kill people, people kill people, but with a weapon it is a lot easier. I am grateful to live in a country which isn't ruled by fear, because fear is a bad advisor.

I have never been to the Netherlands, but I have a hard time believing it is the utopia you are portraying...but that is besides the point.

What you call fear, I call reality.  The reality is, there are people out there who don't care about other people.  There are people out there that will steal, rape, assault and kill 'just because'.

You claim that making it easier to get guns will not work.  What do you base that on?  Statistics show, cities that have instituted 'right to carry' laws, have not had an increase in crime.  In most cases, violent crime goes down.

Allowing honest, law abiding, people to own guns does not cause an increase in crime.  Finland is proof of that and, if you think about it, it makes sense.  Honest, law abiding people, aren't out to commit crimes and giving them a gun isn't going to change that.

What might change, however, is the attitude of the criminal.  Sure, he doesn't care about your life, but he does care about his.  If he knew there was a better than average chance that every customer in the convenience store was armed, he might think twice about trying to rob it.

Laws that take guns out of the hands of regular people only help the criminals.  Criminals don't follow the law as it is.  If they did, they wouldn't be criminals.

You are 100% correct.  My degree is in psychology/criminal justice and I never met a criminal who said, "Wow, I shouldn't use a gun in my crimes that would be illegal."

Its illegal to hunt with a pistol here, its not powerful enough. Here you can only use the pistol as the "finish him" weapon if the first shot didnt kill the animal, or if the animal is in a trap. Other then that pistols can only be used for "sports" shooting.

My Blackhawk is plenty powerful enough...a 240 grain semi-jacketed softnose is quite suitable for up to black bear, although I've heard stories of even bigger game being bagged by the .44 mag. When hunting deer with my Remington 700 I carry my 9mm Beretta 92FS just in case I need to finish him off...haven't needed to yet.

What i find strange about US gun laws (from my point of view), is that theres the gun crazy ones that want to walk with a pistol in their holster at all times (maby a small exaggaration ), and then theres the ones that want to ban all weapons. I hear very little "middle ground" stuff coming from there.

In all my years I have never seen any civilian in public walking around carrying a weapon in a holster with the exception of hunters enroute to a hunt and then the weapon is not loaded, which would be illegal here in California without a conceal-carry permit. I've never felt the urge to cowboy it.

Max, that is because you live in CA.  Many states have what are called open carry or as gun opponents like to call them will west laws.  I live in AZ and we are one of those states.  I prefer to carry my Sig concealed and therefore have a permit to do so.  We live in one of the most free countries in the world.  We were given the second amendment to guarantee that freedom.  The Supreme Court refused to here this issue on many occasions which is disgusting.  Finally we have a court whether you like them or not decided to side with the Constitution on an issue that has been burning since ratification.

Oooooooo, so many points to address. Obama is the single furthest left of centermember of the US Senate at this time. While he has voted during histenure in the Senate, he apparently believes he was elected to pursue his own personal po;itical ambitions, voting aside he has domne NOTHING in the Senate, he has not written a Bill, he has not held any meetings of the Sub-Committee he the Chairman of. He has done only ONE thing since he election to the Senate, runfor President.

The people in this country who have adopted the ant-gun position are merely the sheep for the bad guys. There IS evil in the world, we have fought it as a country and will continue to dos, there are evil people  in the world and i will fight them as an American as long as I breathe. Do I own guns, YES, several of them, have I ever discharged one in anger, NO and I hope I never have to. But if the necessity arises, I will not hesitate.

Sigh.  Every 4 years, the dem nominee is the *MOST* liberal fill in the appropriate blank.  And every 4 years the pub nominee is the *MOST* right wing fill in the blank.  Honestly, you guys sound like it's your first presidential election.

To put it another way, after 8 years abortion is still legal in all 50 states and gay marriage is on the march.  NOTHING of substance ever really changes.  Neither party particularly wants it to change.  If it did, how will they get the sheep in the voting booth next time?  Sheesh.

For someone who implies that they are politically savvy, to make a statement that nothing changes is pretty naive.

In fact, just read what you said has happened in the past 8 years, then tell me nothing changes!

I would never have called Clinton or Carter the "most liberal" anything.  Their voting records would not have supported that statement.

Obama's does, and the fact that people don't recognize it is a combination of biased media and general ignorance among the electorate.

Ahhh....but the other side sure was saying it when they were running.  Repeating election hyperbole doesn't make it fact.  Every 4 years the sky will fall in and mothers will weep if candidate X gets elected, and every 4 years we manage to survive.  Well, okay, this last guy has been an unmitigated disaster but we'll survive him as well.

Nor will anyone call John McCain right wing, he is at best Center Right as Hal said his voting record simply doesn't support that. However, Obama is about as far left as anyone I have seen run for the office in the last 50 years. At best he is cut in the vein of some of European socialist, at worst he some very dangerouss leanings  derived from Karl Marx.

Now as to the philoipsophy of the parties, I am not going to defend many of concepts of the Republican Party, I will say that they are CLOSER to my thinking than the Democrats. Theses comments can all be borne out by studying history. The Democrats historically are a party built on division and racism, they have also learned how to package their ideas or lack thereof in such a way as to make many THINK they are on their side. They CLAIM to be the party of common American, an analysis of the people in Congress puts the lie to that statement, 9 of the top ten wealthiest people in Congress are Democrats. The Democrats are duplicitous, intelectually dishonest, in recent years they have become nothing short of one of several Fifth Columns in this country. Yes, I called them a Fifth Column, there are people in congress that based on their record and behavior should be drummed out of office. They love to talk about Republicans when they are bad, but when Republicans are bad they leave or are forced out of office. The same is not true of democrats in fact illegal behavior of democrats gets them re-elected, see Congressman Jefferson, $90K in his FREEZER for God's sake and he expects us to believe he is honest and upstanding...yeah....right. I was born at night....not last night.

Then we have people in the Democratic Party with delusions of grandeur, like Madame Pelosi, who has decided that she can create a Congressional State dept. and go meet with heads of terrorist organizations.  We have others who will stand up in the well of the House and convict soldiers WITHOUT due process and when the process has run its course and the soldiers are exonerated, his comments stand on the record unaltered, corrected or apologized for, and he is a former Marine, an insult to the uniform. I could go on, but there is no need.
