Danae Cassandra, you need to get yourself set up with a PAL-enabled region-free DVD player.

Kimba the White Lion
Jungle Emperor Leo
The Count of Monte Cristo (1975)
The African Queen

...and it looks like Battle Royale is out in R1
link

Do you know anything about the transfer of the two Jungle Taitei series?  Because if it is simply a transfer of the old VHS tapes of the American dub (which is what we got in R1 for the few episodes that got released), then that's not what I would want.  I would want it unedited and with a Japanese language track.  That's the same problem I have with the Uchu Senkan Yamato R1 releases.

I do know there is a R2 for The Count of Monte Cristo & The African Queen, but I would still love to see an R1.  Don't have money or room right now for another piece of equipment to get a R2 PAL player.

And, as for Battle Royale, those are definitely import, one is the Hong Kong release and the other is the Korea release.  I have both.  The Korea release has much worse English subtitles but a better picture than the Hong Kong one.  The Korea release also has extras - too bad they have no English subtitles (my Japanese is not that good).  If I had an R2 player, I could get one of the UK releases, which have good subtitles and subbed the extras, but they were converted film->NTSC->PAL, so there is apparently a ghosting effect on the disc.  So you see why I want an R1.

That list is by no means comprehensive, just something I threw together while I ate my cereal.  It might pay to search for some of the other stuff.

As for transfer quality, I can't say myself as I've not seen them.  You might be able to Google up a review or two, or there might be a discussion somewhere on the Madman forums.  My experience has been that contacting the Madman staff can sometimes yield results too.

PS - The Experimental Films of Osamu Tezuka might be of interest to you.
Adelaide Movie Buffs (info on special screenings, contests, bargains, etc. relevant to Adelaideans... and contests/bargains for other Aussies too!)

Ah reading a post reminded me of the number one movie that should be on DVD but never will be even though it has won awards.

Song of The South - I know there isn't much of a story line to it and yes it does use some racial stereotypes, but how else do you depict some of those characters from the time period and still be true to that period of history?

With the exception of some legitimate VHS releases about 15-20 years ago and some Asian laser disc versions that have been pirated onto DVD, this movie has never been legally released onto DVD (at least not in the US). It is considered a classic to many, yet in recent years very few have been able to see it. [rant]

Modern pieces of dingo kidneys have been released onto DVD without anyone even thinking twice about it, yet SOTS is being withheld voluntarily by Disney Studios because of some controversies that occurred some 20 years ago when they had a theatrical release for an anniversary of the film. There are hundreds if not thousands of movies produced each year that are more offensive than SOTS will ever by, and they will get released onto DVD in their time, and many of them will be re-released multiple times and some even have fan clubs and start up a movie franchise that makes the studio $$Millions per movie.

I recall when the same thing was being said of the Charlie Chan movies -- which I believe never did make it to VHS. But now all the extant Warner Olands, all the Sidney Tolers from Fox, and a box set of the Tolers from Monogram are available, not to mention all the Mr. Wongs and all the Mr. Motos, and even Boris Karloff's Fu Manchu. So I woiuld say that there is hope, though this would seem to depend on a change of decision-makers at Disney.

We're still also to see a release of an uncensored Fantasia too. I don't believe this has ever seen a home video release.
