| Posted: | | | | Personally, I want to know what the primary genre/s of the film are.
Most films can be classified into a very few primaries.
SciFi Crime Drama Crime/Drama Romance
What I see some people do, a film is primarily a Crime/Drama, and since there is romance involved, then romance genre is selected. While the Genre may actually fit (as a secondary), I think the Crime/Drama ought be first.
Same thing with a Romance. At times there are crimes invoolved within a romance. Now Crime may very well be accurate (as a secondary) Romance should remain first.
This can be true of any Genre Combination
Star Wars
SciFi Drama Romance Etc.
What do you want first...?

I agree that it should not be deleted in favor of "other" genres, but should always appear in the last slot. I agree with this. Or, alternatively, if somehow you could sort by film or TV and get rid of the genre altogether. That's the only reason why I use it (after finding out that's the only way you can sort it). | | | Reviewer, HorrorTalk.com

How is this a general announcement? Yea...color me | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | Weird. This is a topic about contributions. About contributions made to re-order genres and whether or not it should be done or left as is.

| Posted: | | | | about the order of genre.,, I tried to move the order of drama first comedy second for Bonnie and Clyde once,, and got shut down.., Bonnie and Clyde is NOT a comedy first /drama second.. Televsion should always be last as it is the last of three mentionables for what a series or original broadcast airing is and was.. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. It can be useful for some statistical analysis since there is not other built-in marker for TV Shows. For example, it's relatively useless to look for a most collected actor/director if you have a TV Show with 10 seasons that beats any movie actor/director you might have. So (for instance) the more specific genres would be ranked higher and would sort first. The lesser ones such as Television would sort last. Having read this thread I realise I am in a minority here...but I always put Television first in my genres. I use the genre filter a lot and the TV genre has proven invaluable to me. I also think that if something was made for TV then that should be the first genre listed. Having said all that - I use a lot of custom genres (werewolves, vampires. Super Hero, Stephen King, Ghosts, Time Travel), none of which are genres in the strictest sense of the word - which is why I never contribute genres unless it's a brand new profile that's not in the online db. To close: I personally feel the rule is fine as it is and doesn't need changing. |

| Posted: | | | | I agree Neil... And I do the same thing with Genres... I have a list of genres as long as my arm now. Most that people wouldn't consider genres. More like sub-genres. I also never bother with the online unless... 1. There is room and then I don't re-order I just add to 2. It is a new profile I still have a load of profiles to get through but I seldomly agree with the online so I usually change and lock the genres for my profiles anyway. When I saw this thread moved to announcements I thought maybe Ken made a decision one way or another. I am definitely confused by the move.... but guess it was just done in error. | | | Pete | | | Last edited: by Addicted2DVD |

| Posted: | | | | I can understand also the users that say that Television is a main Genre for them, but ... In my opinion the genres Television and Classic are more an additional info than a genre. There can be Fantasy TV series, Horror TV series or Action movies that are classic, ... I can say I like Horror movies and go with this Info through my collection and find things I like, but if I say I like Television, I go through my collection and will find ... everything? Beginning from perhaps a Cartoon series for Kids, over a typical "women" soap opera to a Horror TV series. So imho this genres should be at last. Never tried, but the filter sorts with all the given genres?! Then I don't matter very much of how they are ordered. |

| Posted: | | | | I also list Television first. I would be fine with the removal of Television as a genre if we were given a specific field for it. Maybe a conversion of the ratings field, turning it into a Format field (for Film, Television, Live Performance, Short Films, Box Set, etc.). This could even allow for icons or color-coding to denote what profile belongs to what category.
As for Classic, I remove it from every profile in my local. It is a meaningless genre, since it has no real definition. What I call Classic would wildly differ from what User A considers Classic and what User B considers Classic. It doesn't really mean anything. Does it refer to age? Well, anything before a certain period could be added to Classic. Does it refer to a film's reputation? Someone might say "Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a Classic!" or "The Matrix is a Classic!" It doesn't really serve any point, unlike the other genres. |
