If a movie is released under the same EAN/UPC with different kinds of contents (BR single disc, Doubly Play, Triple Play) the this information falls under the ruling for Edition - IMHO.

Bold by me... Yes, in that case. Otherwise I don't see it as an edition.

That was my mistake. We can't even have the same EAN in the same locality twice. So there would be no way to distinguish between editions if they have the same EAN.

But if they are released on the same day with different EANs (as Editions usually are) then they are the distinguishing criteria as described by the Edition rule.

Release day shouldn't even be a consideration in qualifying as an edition.  A 10th Anniversary Edition and a 25th Anniversary Edition certainly aren't going to be released on the same day, but we still consider the edition as a distinguishing factor.

Very simply a Triple Play is different to a Double Play and both are different to a Standard single disc release.

All three of these can, and on occasion do, get released on the same day. Therefore, unless we use the Edition as given on the front cover how are we to determine between the different releases in the database?

To say we shouldn't include/use these simply baffles me.

The people who don't want these are saying they prefer:
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Instead of:
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (Triple Play)
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (Double Play)
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Really? 'Cos that makes no sense whatsoever!!! (The above is a fictional example purely to demonstrate the folly that is NOT using this edition information  )

Pantheon you have to understand that many people don't see any value in the "add by title" feature.

If you want proof, you search for the movie "Taxi 4" without knowing the actual cover.

This simply falls into the same category.

On the other hand people are adding Editions like "The New Is Always Better Edition" on "How I Met Your Mother: The Complete Season 6" or "The Extra Juicy Edition" on "Desperate Housewifes: The Complete Second Season" just because it contains the word "edition" and there isn't even any other edition in any of the localities that list this particular "edition".

For me it's not a matter of preference. It's a matter of interpreting the rules.
And I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on that point.

They've just released a "Quad Play" of The Amazing Spider-Man in 3D over here.. can I restart this argument :-)

(fx: Parsec runs, realising his life expectancy is about to be severely shortened...)

Seriously guys, we really need to have the rules for these (well what I call) "Combo Packs" with their own subsection in the rule set. Please someone in the Contribution Committee propose this for when Ken is back to help action them.

Yes we can. We use EAN for one and Disc ID for another.

Are you aware that we have Media Type field and filters for that too?

"Media Types" are only known to be: DVD, Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, and Digital Copy.

They are? What on earth is HD-DVD or Blu-Ray? You mean Blu-ray and HD DVD? Sorry, I forgot that using common sense is not allowed here.

Thank you for the pedantic corrections.  Be sure to file a support request to fix the spelling for "Blu-ray", as I just copied that from the quoted rules.  I made no attempt to verify HD DVD before posting.

24-27! This is even more exciting than Romney vs. Obama.

Exciting maybe, but above all, it's a sad state of affairs. This was a fairly simple question, I thought, and even that turns into a mess without an answer. No matter which way I decide to go, I'll always have half of the community disagreeing with it. If we can't even solve such basic issues, then how can we ever reach an agreement on less straightforward matters...?

Invelos: now this is one of those times that we'd all like you to step in and declare which way you want us to go. I even mind which way that is, as long as a decision is made and we can all deal with this in a consistent manner.

I agree - easily solved in a few seconds.
