May be we need one unique identifier per movie, in the same fashion that we need one unique identifier per cast or crew member?

Isn't that what the Original Title field is supposed to do for us?

??

Why?
The movie as such is already identified by "Original Title + Production Year", this, of course, implies that both dates are filled in correctly.

What we are talking about here is the DVD-Title, which may, but doesn't necessarily has to, be identical to the Original Title.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

These discussions about titles is getting ridiculous.

The title rule needs to be changed.  The marketing gimmicks that manufacturers use, does not get us the title we need

Men in Black 3 is the title, not MIB³
Men in Black 2 is the Title, not MIIB
Men in Black is the title, not MIB

Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace  not what ever crap they put on the cover to sell it.

R.I.P.D. is the Title,

or any of the other stupid discussions we have about titles..

I don't think the rule needs to be changed, people just need to use a little common sense in areas where the rules allow for it.  In this case, they do.  While the rule does say to take the title from the front cover, it does not tell us how to determine what on the cover is the actual title.

Using the title that started this thread as an example, people seem to know that 'Jeff Bridges' and 'Ryan Reynolds' are not part of the title.  Why, then, is it so hard to accept that 'Rest In Peace Department' is also not part of the title?

Jeff Bridges: Ryan Reynolds: R.I.P.D.: Rest in Peace Department is clearly the title and the edition is obviously Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD Ultraviolet.

I don't see what the issue is.

You really don't see any difference between actors' names appearing on the cover and a sub-title being included on the cover of the DVD?

I  guess I have ascribed much more intelligence to the users of this program than others.

After you've been hanging around here for so long?
Now that's what I would call "Excessive optimism".

What rule would be ignored. On all releases we have to determine what portion of the text on the front cover is the title and what is not. That is where the common sense (if you want to call it that) comes in. From there you follow the rules on entering what you determined to be the title.

Of course you can show a release to 2 or more people and you can get 2 or more answers on what people believe the actual title is.

WHEN IT'S CONVENIENT OF COURSE!

"Common Sense" and "Invelos Forums" is the very definition of an oxymoron.

Whenever possible. I may be in the minority, but am a HUGE fan of common sense.

Of course I see a difference...just as you seem to see a difference between the title and the sub-title.  If I didn't, my post wouldn't make much sense, now, would it?

When should we ignore the rules and use 'common sense'?

Who said we should ignore the rules and use 'common sense'?  What I said was, "we need to use a little common sense in areas where the rules allow for it.

The rule reads, "Use the title from the front cover." 'Jeff Bridges', 'Ryan Reynolds', 'R.I.P.D.' and 'Rest In Peace Department' are all on the front cover.  Common sense tells me that the title is 'R.I.P.D.', so that is what I would use.  Since the title I used was on the front cover, I have not ignored the rule.

I have used, what I believe to be common sense, but I have not ignored the rules.

My problem with using 'common' sense is that it isn't common, what is 'common' sense to one person maybe completely 'uncommon' to a next.  Instead of relying on 'common' sense I'd rather have the rules improved.
