I think the only way 3D or 3-D should be incorporated into the title is if it appears onscreen as such, otherwise it should be an edition.

My 2 pennies.

Amen.

Except the rules say to take the title from front cover... not onscreen. That is what the original title field is for.

A suggestion that might help for the future.

Instead of Title, I believe we need DVD Title and Film Title.  Then I'd let users choose which they want to display.  People like myself might prefer to see the title of the film.  Others would be more than welcome to display by the title found on the case.  I believe most of the code to support this should already be there (we can already choose to display Original Title rather than Title, correct?), so it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult.

I just see a lot of comments about "it should be what was projected on the screen".  While others feel it should be what's on the case.  I think separating these out and giving them new names that leave no doubt what their purpose is should help in conversations like this.  Asking "what do we do with 3D in the title" is a harder question for people to arrive at a consensus than "what do we do with 3D in the DVD Title?"

I get that Title = DVD Title today, but when you loose that specificity of "DVD" Title, it just makes the conversation more difficult.  I think the mere act of giving our Titles more appropriate names would be beneficial to the group.

I agree, Mark.

Fact is, the "Title" field used to be the title displayed onscreen, which leaves little room for interpretation. When it was changed to the title on the case, all kinds of problems arose. Obviously, for boxsets, the case title should prevail, but for individual films, I'd love to have a "Film Title" equal to the on screen title.

I'd like to see production year changed to the on screen copyright year as well.

I agree as well, provided we have the option to deal with translated titles (either English-language films released in a non-English speaking country or vice versa). This might require an extra field in DVDP.
Additionally, it would be good to have one single standard way of dealing with (seasons of) TV series with regard to titles - at present, they are all over the place (e.g. in the Original Title field).

With regard to Production Year: if the name of that field would be changed to Year of First Public release or something similar, I would be happy.

I totally agree with Mark on this. I'm a big fan of what appears onscreen because that's what the people who made the film wanted me to see. That's how I find what I'm looking for, not by whatever some media company decided to put on the cover.

Changing the title to whatever you prefer is trivial. I have done it for years. The future need not bother.

Forget the technical side for a moment.  The problem is you can't say "What do we do with these Titles?"  You ask a question like that and some people think in terms of the film title and some think in terms of the dvd title.  You can't have a reasonable conversation because two different groups want completely different outcomes.  You can't reach a consensus when people can't even agree what the field represents.

My point is simply that if both titles are available and one group doesn't need to give in to the desires of the other group, we can have more reasonable conversations and settle questions like the one Ken asked much easier.

So, it's been a week and a half.  Has there been any consensus reached?  Have the rules been changed?  Has anything come out of this discussion yet?  Should we expect anything to come out of this conversation?  Just curious to know what's happening on this front.

Fair enough.  So let me re-phrase that slightly...

Ken,

When I have on the Frontcover in big letters:

Lost River in 3D

I write this also as the title. I do it always this way with my many new contributions and had never problems to get accepted by the screener. So I believe it is ok and we can continue this way.
