I'm going to have to agree with Agrare:

If no one cared, it would loose all its power to stir up this much controversy.

The word in itself isn't objectionable - how you use the word may be, though. Same thing goes for body parts, as far as I'm concerned. Breasts, vaginas and penises aren't objectionable in themselves. In a porno film, though - huge difference (absolutely no pun intended).

The context makes all the difference in both cases.

I think the impact of the word is totally different when spoken in a movie then on a public TV channel early in the morning.

By the way "Atonement" is my favorite movie of last year.

Strange coincidence...

There is a small notice today in the largest Swedish newspaper, Dagens Nyheter (a serious morning paper). Translated in verbatim:
The three most effective words in the Swedish language for offending are c*ck, c*nt and f*ck, tells Bengt Dagrin, author of "The Big Dirty Dictionary", to Katrineholms-Kuriren.

This is in the family section of the newspaper! The message is quite clear. Mentioning the words by themselves is not objectionable. Using them in an another context on the other hand, can be very objectionable.

(Katrineholms-Kuriren is another, smaller, daily paper, so Dagens Nyheter is quoting a notice from another paper)

PS, The words are not actually censored in the notice. I did that in the translation.

Hi Paul,

why wouildn't she refer to it as F******g around? there is nothing obscene about that either.

What she did was substitute a word, which is banned by our FCC. The UK is perhaps more liberal.

As I understand it, she never substituted a word. She gave a noun that was the title of the monologue  that she was asked to read.

No more. No less.

What other word could she have used when asked for the title? Was she supposed to say "the title was C star star star"??

So F**ing around is a substitution, for sleeping around, and F**ing, is not suitable for USA. As for

take that up with our FCC & see if they agree with you.

Take Care
Rico

You can say its rude. But is it obscene?

I don't have to take it up with the FCC - they are totally irrelevant to me since I don't have to live under their censorship.

Well it appears some other people still had some. I got 16 positive votes and 0 negatives on that one post, giving me a star to boot.

So thanks to all those that gave me a green

Or cats.

If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

No Stars = eh
1 Star = Pause, read fast, move along.
2 Stars = Take notice, read carefully.
3 Stars = Read all post, act accordingly.
4 Stars = Reserved for God.
Star with a symbol = na na nana naaaa, you're in trouble.
