Invelos does not require that actual crew roles have to be listed in the contribution notes. To whatever extent he wants that, it exceeds their requirements. Interesting comment. You imply that you are creating your own roles. Have you taken the time to consider that when you create crew roles rather than use what is there, you, in fact, cause the need for it to be corrected when Ken modifies the program again? ***personal comments removed ***** | | | Dan | | | Last edited: by Forum Moderator |

Invelos does not require that actual crew roles have to be listed in the contribution notes. To whatever extent he wants that, it exceeds their requirements. Once again, James, you have noted that you are not willing to gio beyond Invelos' requirements, EVEN IF such data is useful to the Community. BTW KDH, is correct. James, I have also not voted no to your refusal to include Crew Roles have I, I vote yes with a comment. I really wish you would help raise all boats and stop trying to go for the lowest common denominator. But, that is your way and your choice.<shrugs> Not an attack BTW, just a regrettable statement of fact, which you verify everytime you say that Invelos doesn't require this or that. I do not create my own roles. There's no implication. If I see a role in the film credits that matches the roles in the rules chart (eg. "Gowns by"), I contribute it using the appropriate role in the program (eg. "Costume Designer"). But I don't list the actual role of "Gowns by" in my notes. | | | ...James

What does Invelos need? They need #1 to pay the bills, #2 to keep things running and up-to-date, and #3 to lighten up and remember this is a hobby.
I have no problem with #1. Most people just want to keep track of their DVDs and don't want to put in the effort themselves (or don't have the time to do so).
I find myself more in the 2nd category than the 3rd. I want to make sure that every profile has as much data as possible, within the rules, but won't kill myself to completely audit them (I'd never be able to watch a DVD if I did). I try to enter everything except cast and crew on my first pass. I am willing to cut corners (such as cloning profiles from another region to find cast and crew for TV series that would be too time-consuming) as long as they fall within the rules. If someone has contributed full cast and crew for a TV series that had none, I won't vote No because they also contributed a studio that has Inc. after it. I might PM a correction, but I know that the data can fixed once it is the on-line database.
The problem that #3 people will never get is that if everyone is held to their standards, this program would grind to a halt. Most of the users would stick to their local databases and only a handful of popular titles would get updated. Even more confusing is that a lot of the #3 people don't even contribute on a regular basis, so they are asking people to conform to a standard that they are not willing to share with the rest of the users.
We need more users to contribute, not less. By raising the bar so high, all that happens is that a lot of people hit their heads on that bar and wander back out the door in a daze, never to return. Perfectly said. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

Skip It is not a statement of fact to say that I go for the lowest common denominator. I spend a lot of time on my contributions and do them to what I believe Invelos wants. It's their program after all. | | | ...James

That says it all for me...and you can count me as one of those who now primarily sticks to his own database. I just don't have the time nor energy to waste on defending contributions in this forum. If it's easy and I'm not going to have to put up with a bunch of crap, then I'll hit the contribute button. Otherwise, I just keep it local and enjoy the hobby. I find my blood pressure stays much more even and, after all, I'm not the one who's losing out. |

| Posted: | | | | I used to be a 2... but whenever I did an update for contribution I'd be 3. On other people's contributions, I'd think 3, act 2.
Lately, with time constraints, and partly under the influence of encounters with 3s, I've pretty much become a 1. I will use things like the Name Variants plug-in, but mostly to quickly get things linked together locally. I want to click on a name and get their work. I'll clone, etc. to get full cast lists into profiles. I have a number of profiles that are probably good enough to be contributed, but because I've not been pedantic in tracking the changes, or am waiting for them to reach critical mass, they remain local. I'll often check name variants against the CLT so that if/when I decide to update to the online, the information is contrib-ready.
Having a number of Asian movies (~20% of my collection), linking is tricky. I noticed recently that when I added Red Cliff and Red Cliff II (HK Blu-Rays) to my wishlist that key cast didn't link between the titles. I quickly made some changes locally, but didn't contribute (as it wouldn't be the honest thing to do). I also have profiles such as Reign: The Conqueror which I'll gradually chip away at when the mood takes me, and probably contribute when the work's finally done.
For the most part, Region 4 is very relaxed. The voters, as far as I've encountered, tend to be 2s. If there are mistakes, PMs are sent, or polite notes left. If a mistake slips through, it's corrected when the data goes live, and so is in the online within days. Luckily for me, I tend to contribute to rarer titles, and purchase within a (wholly) friendly region. On those rare occassions when I do an R1 contribution, it's with trepidation. It's not worth the effort updating a popular title to what seems such an angrateful group. I pity those in R1. That vocal minority exist to primarily your (data's) detriment. | | | Adelaide Movie Buffs (info on special screenings, contests, bargains, etc. relevant to Adelaideans... and contests/bargains for other Aussies too!) |

| Posted: | | | | Even though I've only been using DVDProfiler for just over 4 months, I've had 19 profiles submitted and approved. These were mostly new additions to the database (Canadian Blurays). So I was in category 2.
I still purchase several new Blurays every week (I love Tuesdays!), but I no longer contribute. Certain nameless individuals, one in particular, have really soured me to the whole contribution thing. I just can't be bothered any longer. While I've never had any of my contributions rejected, constantly reading these forums about minuscule nit-picky "rules" issues has put me off.
So, my small number of (but fairly regular) contributions certainly won't be missed in the grand scheme of things, I'm now firmly in group #1 and will keep any new data local only.
