As the 3D effects imho still are just impessive in theatre, of course in 3D. Let's see what I'll think. I heard good and bad of the movie. |

Totally done by rote and entirely predictable (other than the main bad guy didn't pop up back to life---they skipped one cliche). Of course the main story is something similar to others and perhaps the key scene are foreseeable, but a great presentation, good effects and much entertaining. One of the best movies is saw in last time. |

| | Posted: | | | | Oscars nominations are in this morning.., with Avatar and The Hurt Locker lead the Oscars race with nine nominations each. I knew as everyone else did there was NO way Avatar could tie Titanic's record 11 awards . I heard yesterday that Avatar was only 31M (?) behind the $1.8 B and will easily make that up this week alone ..

| | Posted: | | | | I just came out of Avatar. I don't think you have heard of it, it's a small-budget little indy movie that only runs in arthouse cinemas. Or something like that.
Sorry, I am not overly impressed. Sure the 3D stuff looked fabulous - for about 15 - 20 minutes. Then I got used to it and it couldn't distract me from the story anymore. You can split the story into three elements: it's either boring, melodramatic or cheesy - and not in a good way.
I had quite a number of *groan* moments, especially towards the end. For example when he tried to deliver a speech (and I love speeches!) that was a mixture of Braveheart (Unite the clans!) and Independence Day (Tomorrow we will celebrate our Independence Day! [or something along those lines]). Or when the evil guy drew a knife from his Mech suit(!!!) and then good guy says "I hoped you'd say that" - Stallone at his best! - But wait, no Stallone in the movie!! And when she held him in his arms I waited for him to say: *Darth Vader rattle* "Only once I want to see you with my own eyes" (he didn't, but he might as well).
When I saw the chief warrior indian Na'vi I instinctively had to think of a Mohawk native American, I couldn't help it.
On the technical side, as I said it looked great except for one effect: When a real person was about one quarter "deep" into the picture I always had the feeling that the proportions weren't right, they all looked to thin. It was ok, when they were direct at the front or in the background, but in this section they just didn't look right. In the beginning I also had the feeling as if the persons were to small in comparison to their surroundings. I'm not talking about the Na'vi, I noticed it long before I saw the first Na'vi, I'm talking about real persons standing around their own research utilities. But maybe that's both just my eyes. | | | Karsten

I won't start on the effects and such, I only state that Cameron once again pushed the limits of the technical side of filmmaking.
Regarding the story, sure it's a well known story arc, and the comparison to Pocahontas came to my mind during the movie as well. However, that doesn't make it a bad story at all. There's a reason why this movie still draws sold out thaters after running for seven weeks. IMO, even though quite well known, the main elements of the story, so to say the message of the film, can not be told too often.
I can't say that I found the film tedious or boring, the two and a half plus hours went by like nothing, even after a twelve hour workday. Even my girldfriend liked it and was surprised she didn't tire.
And I was pleasently surprised that the (expected) heroic speech part was mercifully short (ID4 was much worse in this regard) and the death scenes pretty quick too (no final wise words packed in a five minute monologue), so thanks to Cameron for that as well.
IMO a perfect blend of filmmaking and CGI, and I'm sure to watch it at least once more in the theater.
