At least this makes documentation a lot easier, for not talking about the actual "finding" of dates, which for several cast-/crew-members turned out out to be nearly impossible.
Anyone for taking this to the rules committee?? I agree that the BY consept is horrible, but the same time I think that IF something should be done for the Cast & Crew linking system, it should be done in program code level. I hate the idea that all the work that has been done now with the BYs goes down the drain and instead we get a system that is little bit better but not good. What happens then? We use couple of years to do all the changes to even get back to this level and then Ken makes another change and we can start all over again I just think that if some changes gets done, they should be done correctly right from the beginning. |

I just think that if some changes gets done, they should be done correctly right from the beginning. While I agree with this, I'm not sure how this could ever be achieved. No matter what system we choose, it will always be left to us users to provide the correct linking. For linking matters there really is no difference between BY, "first appearance" or NameID. As soon as two (or more) persons share the same name, we'd have to try to sort them to the correct identifier. The main problem with the BY system is, that in addition to the sorting, it is very difficult to find verifiable data to establish this identifier. So even if we know that there are two or more persons that share the same name, we would not be able to establish a differentiation as long as we don't find documentation for the BY. IMHO establishing identifiers should be made as easy as possible (provided we find documentation that it's actually needed), and I can't think of a much easier way than the "first appearance", because this data is to be found within our database, and doesn't need any extra (and hard, if not impossible, to find) documentation. The problem that arises after the identifier has been established is: Linking. Means which credit does belong to which entry in our database. But as said before, as long as we parse credits on disc and not on title level, this will always be a problem. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

| Posted: | | | | If you take the date of first appearance from our database, then the date may change when new DVD releases are added. If you take the date from some other place, we get the same "proof" problem we have with BY.
edit: In addition, it has the same problem as BY, in that different actors may have the same year. So if a change is made, it should be fundamentally better. | | | Hans | | | Last edited: by Staid S Barr |

| Posted: | | | | I agree... first appearance is not as good as some seem to think it sounds. It is not like movies are released on DVD in the order they came out.... so you can be looking at a moving target. Not a good thing. And outside our database puts us on documentation that can maybe be found for the big names... but not so easy for the lesser name people. | | | Pete |

We should just assign a unique identifier. a,b,c or 1,2,3. | | | My Home Theater |
