If this is a rare condition and the note is otherwise helpful, it should stay.  However, I'm open to removing or changing the note if it gets in the way more often than it helps.

Ken
It's the first time I have seen or heard of this particular type of credit.  But with the another medium in place I don't grasp the logic. As I noted Les Mis will be omb Broadway to film, another medium, Life of Pi will be omb book to film, another medium. But Prometheus is not another medium, from Alien  to Prometheus, film to film, not another medium. If we've seen this sort of thing once, we will see something similar again. Do, ithink that note is best removed, I am a little nervous about it not knowing what other cans of worms might be kicked over but...in theory, for example, it would seem that omb could become remarkably like screenplay but...<shrugs>

The note is not otherwise helpful as, if memory serves, the reason the "Based on anything by" credit was added was so that we could track all OMB credits regardless of what that medium was.  Leaving the note will, as happened here, just cause arguments the next time a film is remade as, technically, a film isn't another medium but the same medium.

Totally agree with Ken's ruling.

But then, when I edited my copy of Prometheus I didn't feel the need to discuss it with anyone else. The rules clearly indicated an OMB entry and that's what I did.

I'm with CalebAndCo, 'Adapted from another work' would be more useful.

I'm all for that, though I think it would change the correct answer on this issue, which is fine by me.

Now I want everyone to take deep breath and pay attention for a minute. I said all of this throughout this thread in pieces. This is the contribution forum. What position did I take, simply that omb was not within the ules on this film now and gave detailed explanations why. I got well, the majority and yadaA yada. The majority can't change the rules, only ken can. There was a lot of venom spewed at me and little if any directed st anyone personally. Ken has weighed in, I expressed my thoughts which ken addressed and a solution has been developed within a page.

That's the way these things usually develop. Ken used to have a line in the rules which basically said if in doubt, leave it out. This was just such a case. I am pleased with end result but I am not pleased with how we got there. These things always take the same avenue, I defend the data and therules as they are dealt with today. That is the function of this forum...contributions today. It is not about changing rules, that's the rules forum. If in doubt leave it out.

It's amazing now that ken ruled, those who were so lamely supporting breaking the rule entirely have weighed inon how to improve. Now if they would just recognize the rules are, and support them instead continually supporting breaking them,. Ken doesn't have the time to weigh in on every single issue. To ne honest, had I been able to change this myself, I would have done so quickly and solicited what Caleb came up with. But I don't have that ability, I will always deal with the rules as they st that moment, and I will never support anyone who tries to circumvent and you all know who you are. It would be nic to see for a change, you know  skip is right, we can't do this today, keys try to get ken to modify it or take it to the rules.

I will defend the rules and the data always. As the rules change so will I.

Agree.

If Ken feels he needs to clarify the issue further however that is welcome also.

Not a.sermon just a thought . I hope I caught most of the typos. For those who seem to enjoy the belittling approach, think about how you feel when I get pushed too far and fire a few rounds if my own. None of you know what my life is now, or the challenges involved. I have said I hate using a smartphone but it is whatvit is for now.

Because the answer was based on the wording used and that part of the rule would change. Prometheus is not an adaptation of Alien, so if the rule were that things adapted from another work fell under OMB, it would not qualify. Based on characters was meant to cover the prequel/sequel cases, but sometimes a derivative work uses a setting rather than characters. I'd be for renaming this category, perhaps to "elements," and putting this sort of situation under that.

This situation is not unique to Prometheus. It happens all the time to TV spin-offs where the original creators aren't involved.

As I noted, martian,, the majority feeling did not change that under the rule  as current structured this entry did
Not comply. The majority wanted a change, ken ruled, but the only way to make it legal or prevent a similar discussion in the future is to change/modify that note..
