The main problem is to know that "John Smith" in "Movie 1" is the same actor than "John D. Smith" in "Movie 2", but is a different person than the "John Smith" in "Movie 3". This needs to spend much time in research, and in certain cases is even impossible to obtain. But at least, for main actors, we should avoid absolutely two things : useless variants and unknown BY.

If the cast and crew are entered "as credited", then creating a new profile, or adding cast and crew to a profile which doesn't have them and verifying the credits is a piece of cake. Just enter what you see on the screen.

The "linking" process should be completely separated from the data entry phase.

Once the profile is created, those that wish to spend the time researching what names need to be linked can do so under a completely different contribution process built especially for the "linking" database. There could be voting just like on profile contributions to insure that integrity is maintained. The existing CLT system does not work and will never work!

But that is what we have, and probably shall ever have. I can live with that and have a correct local database with current system, but this is done against rules, so cannot be contributed.

Which makes it useless to everyone else. Hell, I could come up with my own scheme or use the IMDB method if all I was worried about was my local database!

What is useless is a couple system/rules that do not allow to get correct data (correct = can be sorted, searched, linked and filtered).

You propose a change of system. This has been promised for years, and we have nothing. I propose a change of rules, that can be implemented tomorrow. Current system with correct names works (it works for many users that work only on their database, so it will work for the online).
Why not do that now and get a good starting point for a future system, if one day it is implemented ?

Because, once again, you are complicating the data entry, requiring people to research every name in the cast/crew list of every movie. A lot of people do not want to do that. For those that do, that's great. Let them do it separately from someone who just wants to build a profile.

Do I  expect it to be done any time soon? No. But, I don't expect Ken to change the current system through a rule change either.

That doesn't mean I won't keep reminding him that it NEEDS to be done.

Really ?
If I follow your reasonning, people do not want to work to get a correct linking. What will be the interest of a new system if nobody enters linking data. And those data will not come just looking at the credits...

Your new system will be of no use if users do not want to work on it. And my change of rules does not ask more work than what will be necessary for the new system. In other words, to work correctly, your new system needs also to complicate the entry data.

How can people here think that we can obtain database functions that work fine without doing anything...

Because they have other contributors that upload data the way they want it. And if you propose a change or question why, you are told this is how it's been done for years. And even if the change is correct they don't care.

Well, the nice thing about the CLT is that Ken could use it and the "credited as" data from the online database to populate the new linking system database and a huge chunk of the linking would exist from day one. It could then be refined by all those people that currently spend untold hours on the CLT, BY's and updating names in profiles. They obviously enjoy working on those things. I don't see that changing.

Build it and they will come!

It seems that you do not know exactly the problem. Current linking with CLT and "credited as" concerns a few hundreds of actors. But you have many thousands of Asian names and accented names with no linking at all. We can be happy if yourhuge chunk of the linking concerns 10% of the problem...

Just ask in rules to use correct spelling in names and give a rule for order of Asian names, and you solve a great part of the problem, most of non linking names coming from those two problems.

Anyone can throw around unsubstantiated numbers.

You hold your breath waiting for Ken to change the rules, and I'll hold mine waiting for him to change the program.

Complete list of Common Names  •  A good point for starting with Headshots (and v11.1)
