University is free in Sweden, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn also free in Finland. That's not so weird though, taxes are after all higher in Sweden than the States.. No, what blows me away are charts like the one below detailing government spending per capita on health care. As you can see, countries like Canada and Sweden, where health care is provided for everyone by the government, actually spends less per capita than the U.S., who only provide health care for a certain percentage of the population. Actually, we can pay for school, but nobody has to. Schools are funded by taxes and everybody is able to go for free. You also have the liberty not to pay for health insurance... But you really don't have a choice - so is it a liberty? I live in Denmark where we have what you would call Socialism. To pay 50% taxes is pretty common and no one really seems to have a problem with it, nor feel that they are not free to do whatever they want. What liberties is it that we don't have? The freedom to do what you want is quite closely tied to economic freedom when you think of it - which leaves a LOT of americans pretty restrained. They really don't have that many possibilities.
